Hearing Tuesday on Pine Forest Rezoning

The Moore County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing Tuesday night on a rezoning request for the proposed Pine Forest development

MHK Ventures Inc., the developer, has asked the county to rezone about 1,652 acres on N.C. 211 near the Archie Road and Hoffman Road intersections southeast of West End to accommodate a hamlet-type Planned Unit Develop-ment.

The proposal drew strong opposition from environmentalists when it was presented in 2009. Objections ranged from water availability to concern about disturbing natural habitat.

However, when the commissioners first heard the request last February, the board tabled the matter to give the county attorney and the county manager time to negotiate a water system development agreement submitted by the developer.

The Moore County Planning Board had previously voted unanimously to recommend approval of the zoning change.

The proposal calls for a private residential development with an 18-hole golf course and a resort with a hotel, another 18-hole golf courses, a nine-hole course, a clubhouse, a small inn, a resort hotel and a small commercial district. If developed as proposed, Pine Forest would have up to 710 residential units and as many as 300 hotel rooms.

The hearing will be held during the board's regular 6 p.m. meeting at the historic courthouse in Carthage. It will be quasi-judicial, which means speakers will be sworn in and only evidence, not opinion, will be presented.

"Pine Forest would have up to 710 residential units and as many as 300 hotel rooms"

Assuming there are two to a unit and room, that comes to 1,420 residents and 600 hotel guests. Is Moore County really ready for this kind of population growth? Just because 211 is being widened it doesn't mean we can acomodate that many new cars on the road and new people in the area.

Please correct the headline to reflect that the meeting is actually Tuesday. I don't see how they can call it a hearing when it sounds like essentially, no one's opinion will be allowed to be heard. Are posters or banners or signs which show disagreement allowed or have these "hearings" just so that they can say they held one ? The commisioners seem to have no interest in what the citizens of Moore County want, only what big business wants. It's shameful and sad.

How about tee shirts that display disagreement, will they be allowed ? Why do our county commissioners not care about what the people of this county think about their decisions ?? To me that is pure arrogance !!
