U.P. Girls Beat Byrd, Boys Fall

In a Friday Cape Fear Valley Conference basketball double header, the Lady Vikings blitzed Douglas Byrd 63-27 while the Vike boys fell on the short side of a 75-55 final score to the visiting Eagles at Bob Ward Gymnasium.

Led by a 20-point performance from senior point guard Tyesha McLean, the Union Pines girls improved to 14-2 on the season with their fourth straight victory. The win also moved Union Pines league record to 5-1 at the midpoint of the CFVC season as it remains tied for first place in the league standings with Westover.

Also finishing in double figures on the night for the Vikings were sophomore Tyler Ross and senior guard Tashi Whitney. Ross posted a 14-point, 13- rebound double-double on the night, while Whitney had 11 points, seven steals and three assists.

Junior captain Crystal Hicks had a monster all-round game, finishing with six points, eight assists, seven rebounds and six steals in just three quarters of action.

The Union Pines boys’ hung tough in Friday’s game. After trailing 40-28 at the half, the Vikes cut the deficit to 51-43 late in the third period. But Douglas Byrd used a 20-7 run to pull away and secure a critical league win that moved the Eagles (3-11, 3-3 CFV) to third spot alone in the league standings.

The Vikings are now 4-12 on the year and moved to 2-4 in league play after suffering their fourth straight CFVC loss Friday.

Both Union Pines team return to action Saturday in a nonconference hoops twin bill, starting with the Lady Vikings game against 2A Jordan Matthews (10-1), scheduled to tip-off at 5 p.m.in Siler City.
