Houston Takes Stage in Sanford

The Heart of Carolina Jazz Society presents jazz vocalist Melva Houston performing with the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra, Friday, Jan. 14, at 8 p.m., at Temple Theatre, 120 Carthage St., in Sanford.

Gregg Gelb directs the orchestra, and Alexander Brower will also provide vocals.

Houston, a jazz and blues vocalist, has performed for more than 20 years in live performances across the U.S .and internationally. A native of Memphis, Tenn., Houston began her career with gospel performances. At the age of 16, she moved into R&B as a backup singer for Stax Records, where she recorded with R&B greats such as Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, Wilson Pickett and Sam and Dave.

Houston made her first tour of Europe with the Platters and starred in a Motown revue.

Concert tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and children. Seats are general admission. Call the Temple Theatre box office at (919) 774-4155 between 2 and 6 p.m.
