S.P. Grocery Store Robbed at Gunpoint

Southern Pines police are looking for three male suspects who allegedly robbed the Bo's Food Store at gunpoint Sunday night.

The incident occurred about 8:45 p.m. when two employees were closing up the store at 750 SW Broad St. One employee was inside while the other was in the parking lot gathering shopping carts.

"An employee went outside to get a buggy, and someone slipped up behind him," said Lt. Rodney Hardy, of the police department.

Two other suspects came up, and all three forced the employee back inside at gunpoint, he said.

Once inside, the suspects took a wallet and cell phone from one employee and cash from the store. The three fled on foot, ran through the alley and headed west toward Bennett Street, Hardy said.

"We do believe there was a vehicle someplace waiting for them," he said.

The three men, all armed, were described as black males. Police have some details about two of the suspects.

The first is described as being tall with long dreadlocks and wearing a pullover shirt and jeans. The second was said to be between 6-foot-5 and 6-foot-6, wearing a pullover shirt and jeans.

The report did not indicate that any of the three were wearing masks or covered their faces, Hardy said.

Anyone who may have information about the incident is asked to call police at (910) 692-7031.

What is it with young black men and armed robberies in this town? We tend to think we are in a safe small town, yet our crime rates are well above average.

kgirl 2 years, 4 months ago

theone: where does it say they were 'young'? After asking that, I can also say that I assumed they were young black males also, early 20s maybe. And its not just southern pines with armed robbery problems, it seems it is becoming more common in moore and hoke counties.

fugitiveguy 2 years, 4 months ago

I am thankful they did not shoot the employee. They will likely strike again before they are caught considering the "don't snitch" bs that seems to prevail in the black communities.

theonewithsense 2 years, 4 months ago

I just assumed they were young black men because I have prejudice. They just always seem to be young black men. I do remember the robbery of the convenience store that was committed by men in golf shirts. Yhey might not have been black, but I assumed they were. I don't remember another armed robbery in the town that was committed by anyone other than young black men. It seems it is usually three of them too.....

If they were robbing them because they were hungry they would've taken steaks, not cash. These were your typical Jk As's

0

fugitiveguy 2 years, 4 months ago

I assumed they were black because in Moore County that is almost always the case. Prejudice has little if anything to do with it.

actually sir - people like YOU, who keep bringing racism up and failing to see truths, are the ones keeping racism alive!!!

and this is yet again the reason for people to get a concealed carry permit! you have the right to defend your self. I hope they find these idiots...

They'll be caught. No way all three can cover their tracks, have alibis, and not say anything to anybody that will come back to nail them.

Let's hope these hoodlums are caught before it escalates into something like what happened in the not-so-distant past.

Everyone packs a "heater" problem solved. Try to rob Bo's again and an old lady with a pistol on isle 3 takes 'em out! Makes you think ...

More money will be spent today, tomorrow, next week and all of this year on catching a non-violent, adult marijuana smoker in his/her home then to catch these criminals who commit an armed robbery. Sad, isn't it? http://www.leap.cc

@HillTopper - Ya, that works to stop gang shootings across the country, huh? (Eye's roll.) @James- Shooting the robbers worked out well in recent local history, huh?

Feel free to call me names or offer me cookies for disagreeing with you.

The last time I remember robbers being shot resulted in them being stopped and imprisoned, hopefully and probably for life. Had they not been shot on site, they would have kept robbing like they were until caught. If someone chooses to use a gun in a robbery they take the risk that they might die or spend the rest of their life in prison.

I make the personal decision to have a concealed carry permit. If my business gets robbed, they will meet someone that is armed also. I will do what is necessary to protect my life.

If someone pulls a gun on you and your family to rob you and you wish to take the chance that they won't kill you and you choose not to fight back, then that is your choice.

Maybe if we made laws so that law abiding citizens were not allowed firearms and the bad guys knew that they were the only ones with guns, they would quit robbing.

Maybe if everyone was armed, like in kennesaw ga, the robbers might not be so inclined to rob when they know they will be facing a gun.

Yeah, I got to agree with HillTopper, my girlfriend on isle 3 taking them out is a good solution.

BigE 2 years, 4 months ago

I'm sorry James the "actual facts" that you refer to... can you send me the documented evidence of them. Which metropolitan area has seen a reduction in gang shootings by arming both sides as a deterrent?

And... in which armed robbery did the gang that was working the Route 1 corridor earlier this year actually shoot someone? Oh ya, the one where someone shot at them first. Pound your chest all you want and promote the macho attitude that we should all shoot first, but if Mr. Kelly shot that baby in the store he would have been responsible for taking an innocent life. As theonewithsense says, its a choice- one with better odds than the other.

The recidivism rate for armed robbers who were shot and killed has dropped dramatically.

HillTopper 2 years, 4 months ago

Get a grip people. It was just a joke. Ain't no old lady going to be packing a pistol in Bo's ... we all know old ladies prefer shotguns! Easier shot ...

0

Poundman 2 years, 4 months ago

We should have more capital punishment. It would cut down on crimes like this.

0

MisterG 2 years, 4 months ago

...except that capital punishment has been proven to do nothing to deter crime.

1

Poundman 2 years, 4 months ago

Actually it has. Tougher punishments result in less crimes, ask some Arabs about stealing in their country, loss of hands results in less thievery.

0

Ross 2 years, 4 months ago

No Poundman - all studies show almost the opposite happens.

I'm not sure if the comments are racial or factual. Anyone have any stats on the percentage of violent crimes committed by race?

0

MisterG 2 years, 4 months ago

Violent crimes committed? No. Convictions? Yes. And there is a difference.

0

RmeMP 2 years, 4 months ago

LOL YOU said,

"Sounds like to me ya'll a bunch of racists, bunch of white people whinning bout black people in general. WTF is wrong wid ya'll?"

Who sounds racist now?!?!

0

RmeMP 2 years, 4 months ago

curious "colesue21" - what race are you? i find it odd that you are attempting to pen in what is commonly referred to as "ebonics" on this thread, but when i review your comment history i don't see it anywhere else?!

actually, a majority of your older posts are very well written...

you wouldnt happen to be non-black, but trying to stoke a fire here would you? thats the impression i am getting - maybe im wrong though?

0

RmeMP 2 years, 4 months ago

white, black, hispanic, asian, etc... it doesn't matter the race folks!

"dont snitch" doesnt matter either - you commit armed robbery and i find out about it, im turning your arse in; plain and simple! i dont care what color, nationality, or creed you are - a thief belongs in one of two places:

in prison or a coffin

you keep pulling guns on people and you will end up in one of those two - i guarantee it!!!

ps - come steal from MY home, and my .40 cal GLOCK won't care what race you are either :)

have a nice night!

Does anyone remember Mr. and Mrs. Kelly and the events that lead to the death of Mr. Kelly? Same senerio with these armed robbers. Hopefully no one else will have to die before Law Enforcement can put a stop to their boldness....

Having been a victim in a store being rob this is one of the awfullest feelings you will ever have standing there with a gun and no way to protect yourself. After experiencing this I invested in me a nice piece of metal and its legal. It's to bad someone didn't come upon this robbery and take these three hoodlums out. Black, white or green people like this are too sorry to get off their arsse and work so they go around robbing others. I pray for the victims in the store because I know how they feel. This not about racist its about hard working American Citizens taking America back and protecting their "RIGHTS"...............

0

jrt5903 2 years, 4 months ago

I don't give a rat's arse about what race the robbers might be. I only know that when / if they get caught, our judicial system will likely fail us by allowing the robbers to receive a slap on the wrist in the form of a short sentence, or no sentence, at all. It seems that the criminal has more rights than the victim. On the concealed weapons issue, I strongly disagree with lots of people carrying concealed. In my experience, many of those who seek to "protect themselves" will find (or create) a reason to use that force. Yet another factor that I haven't seen mentioned is that people who aren't properly trained (I don't mean just a safety course) are likely to have their own weapons taken from them and used against them. Maybe we need to make sure that the crooks get stiff sentences the first time.

0

HillTopper 2 years, 4 months ago

Problem is if they convict them and actually hand out a sentence that requires them to spend some time behind bars ... THERE'S NO WHERE TO PUT THEM! Jails are full. That goes back to projects like that big ole jail in Carthage. Money not spent very wisely. We need to focus our attention on creating more "storage space" for criminals and not state-of-the-art facilities. Just more capacity. Heck, criminals know that they're not going to do any time. Most of the time it's probation. So no big deal to them. I'm sure law enforcement agents just get fed up and say " what's the point ". Catch them and all they do is slap them on the hand. Commit a crime and be 100% sure you're going to jail would make a lot of people think twice.

0

pinewoodnc 2 years, 4 months ago

jrt5903, I agree that unless someone is thoroughly trained in the use of a gun, they can end up having the gun taken away and injured or killed with their own gun. It seems many love to "talk big" about having a gun and how they will use it, but if it came down to it, they would hesitate too long or be overtaken by the perpetrator. Also, for example, as to the perpetrators of crimes, just look at the Fayetteville paper and all the crime articles (especially of robberies and drug charges) and see who the criminals are. Can't deny what is. People can claim racism, but the facts are the facts.

HillTopper 2 years, 4 months ago

Back to the original story ... You ever driven by Bo's at night? That parking lot is dark. Seems to me if the owners of Bo's are concerned about the safety of their employees and customers ... they'd get some lights!

0

Zoey 2 years, 4 months ago

pinewoodnc, Yes, handgun proficiency seems to be lacking in Moore County. For what reason? Unless you have access to rural private land, residents have no local place to become 'trained' with their weapon. Unlike Moore County, other Counties help provide adequate training facilities for their residents. Check this out, it's becoming a common practice: http://www.wakegov.com/firingrange/default.htm

Instead of getting a facility like this to help educate and train our law-abiding Residents , we get a new MegaJail to provide for our Criminals...

1

marathonman 2 years, 4 months ago

Ed's Gunshop and ask for Dwight. This is where official training is provided for anyone who wishes to own a personal weapon. Once completed, a permit to carry is issued by the Sheriffs Office if you wish!

0

pinewoodnc 2 years, 4 months ago

My feeling is if you can't be trained, then do not use a gun. Should people go out and drive a car with no instruction? Should someone fly a plane without training? There are other ways of protecting yourself. Take some self-defense training. Many martial arts folks teach basic self-defense. I took six months of martial arts training specifically for the purpose of protecting myself as I lived in a big city. I also had four dogs. Thieves want an easy target. If they hear multiple dogs barking, they will move on.

Zoey 2 years, 4 months ago

marathonman, You have missed my point. Where is one to go practice after completion of CCP? Nowhere. The one-time range test isn't going to make you an Ed McGivern or Annie Oakley, which was pinewoodnc's point. Dwight Creech (past president) of MCWCC? The MCWCC seems nice, but the Membership Application requires a referral (in laymans terms, Private).

Whats with the LEO range on 15-501? It seems abandoned most of the time. Why not open it up for CCP holders and the public to train? A indoor range sure would be nice on a day like today.
