Stephen Harold Stewart received his Eagle Scout Award Saturday, Feb. 12, at 5 p.m.
Stewart is a member of Pinehurst Boy Scout Troop 7, which meets weekly at Community Presbyterian Church. Scout leaders, fellow Scouts, family, friends and acquaintances were in attendance.
He is the son of Tabitha Stewart, of West End, and Kevin Stewart, of Robbins. He is the grandson of Gloria B. Stutts, the late Harold B. Stutts and Melvin and Wanda Stewart.
Presenters included previous and current Scoutmasters, troop leaders and troop officials whose leadership and guidance paved the way for Stewart to attain his Eagle Scout rank. Don McKenzie served as the master of ceremonies Alan Kondziola, Scoutmaster for Troop 7, presented the Eagle Award, and George Atherholt presented the Eagle Charge.
Stewart also received a Good Citizenship Award from the Marine Corps League, Sandhills Detachment as well as various certificates and letters of congratulations from governmental agencies and dignitaries.
He began his trail to Eagle as a Tiger Cub in the fall of 2000 as a first-grader. He joined Cub Scout Pack 7 at Community Presbyterian Church in Pinehurst. Stewart enjoyed summer day camps, pinewood derbies, Blue and Gold Banquets, and camping trips as a Cub Scout. He advanced through the ranks and eventually earned the Arrow of Light, the highest award in Cub Scouting.
Stewart then crossed over into the world of Boy Scouting by joining Troop 7 in April 2006 and enjoyed many great experiences throughout his Boy Scout career. In the summer of 2010, he had the privilege of attending the National Boy Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Va., to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Boy Scouting in America. While there, he served as a "hometown news correspondent," which allowed him to share his experiences with everyone back home. Stewart's Eagle service project consisted of repairing and refurbishing the basketball court at the Sandhills Alliance Church located in Pinehurst. He chose this project because of his love for the sport of basketball. He wanted to give others a nice place to exercise and enjoy the game of basketball.
To earn Boy Scouting's highest award, Stewart has earned all the required ranks as well as a total of 39 merit badges. He has held several leadership positions within the troop, such as patrol leader as well as den chief for Pack 7.
He is currently a sophomore at The O'Neal School, where he is on the soccer team, the basketball team and the track team. Upon graduation, he hopes to attend college and study sports medicine.
