Two Different Songs

I, too, would like to respond to Steve Bouser’s column and his contention that it would be nice if the song “America the Beautiful” could be substituted for “The Star-Spangled Banner” as this nation’s national anthem.
I think that most of us who have lived a long, wonderful life in these United States have heard this subject discussed more than once. I opposed this premise then, and I oppose it now! Why? Because the two songs represent two completely different aspects of America.
“The Star-Spangled Banner” sings of honor, heroism and the devotion to the spirit of those who offered and those who gave their lives for freedom. “America the Beautiful” sings of the glory, grandeur and unmatched beauty of this country we Americans share.
The first speaks to the sacrifices made by the patriots who formed and those who now protect our nation. What possibly could replace this? Certainly not a pretty song about the beautiful land that we are blessed to live in today!
If it’s not broken, why must we fix it?
