Southern Pines police are still searching for a burglar they say jumped from a second-story window Wednesday morning when the homeowner returned.

Virginia Monroe, 35, left her home in the 300 block of Country Club Drive about 8:30 a.m. to run an errand. She returned home about 15 minutes later and noticed someone had forced entry, said Lt. Rodney Hardy, of the Southern Pines Police Department.

"She calls for her dog, and dials 911," Hardy said. "Then she hears a smash, goes around the house and sees him (suspect) running."

The suspect broke into the home from a first-floor side door and exited by jumping out a second-floor window in the back of the home, he said.

The suspect is described as a black male in his 20s, 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing between 215 and 225 pounds. He was wearing a black sweatshirt and gray pants.

He fled the scene heading east on Indiana Avenue and may have last been spotted on East Massachusetts Avenue and North Weymouth Road, according to police.

A police K-9 unit tracked the suspect a short distance, but then lost the trail, Hardy said.

There were no items listed as stolen from the home on the police report.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call the police department at (910) 693-4110. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call the department's tip line at (910) 693-4110.

This must have been a horrible experience for the homeowner. Also, I "heard" about a woman that got beat up after getting out of her car at a local store. Another woman jumped on her & tried to steal her purse. As said, this is what I heard through emails being sent out warning people to be careful. No proof yet that it's true.

I got the same email. They said it was the Fresh Market area.

hcaeb ... shouldn't put name of business without confirmed facts. Fresh Market is frequented by alot of elderly people. Dig deeper before you post. Crime seems to be heating up in our little area ...

If this is/has been going on, I wonder why it is not reported sooner.

Bflat...I agree. One of the things about living in a resort area, is you find that news like this is usually played down. If you look at the police blotter some of it is in there, but not all. I am not sure if this is due to the law enforcement agencies or the Pilot.

Agree. Also, the police blotter is rather old by the time it's published. I went to the inmate information website and couldn't figure out who it might be based on the timeframe the incident took place and the assault aspects.

so pines always likes to act as if they don't have any crime. most go unsolved. it's time to take the blinders off and realize that the town has a serious drug problem, which most crime in some way is linked to, and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. by downgrading and turning a blind eye doesn't solve the problem...doesn't make it go away either. the public would be fine reading articles saying "drug arrest made" "robbers caught." southern pines has the areas worse reputation for drugs (especially certain parts of the town). why is it that there isn't a drug officer assigned to the police department there???
