An Aberdeen man is dead following a wreck Monday night on Saunders Boulevard, according to emergency responders.
The man, whose name wasn’t immediately known, was driving a red Toyota truck toward U.S. 1 when the truck hit the guard rail on the right-hand side of the road, crossed the center line and collided head on with a Hummer, said Aberdeen Fire Chief Phillip Richardson.
Responders extricated the unconscious man from the truck, according to Southern Pines Fire Chief Hampton Williams.
The man, who apparently never regained consciousness, was taken by helicopter to UNC Hospitals Chapel Hill where he died, Williams said.
The driver of the Hummer was reportedly treated and released at FirstHealth Moore Regional.
Firefighters from Aberdeen and Southern Pines, along with Moore County EMS and Aberdeen police responded to the wreck that closed Saunders Boulevard for nearly four hours.
