NM Girls, Pinecrest Boys Capture Conference Titles

The North Moore girls basketball team earned the program's first regular season conference title since 1996 on Friday with an 80-50 win over North Rowan.
The Pinecrest boys had a much tougher time capturing their second straight conference title, needing overtime to overcome Hoke County, 88-85, in Raeford.
The Lady Mustangs (18-5, 14-2) were led in scoring by Shakorya Brower with 23 points, while Katelyn Sheffield had 19. Jalisa Davis had 12 and Tashonna Farmer had nine.
The Lady Mustangs host West Montgomery at 7 p.m. Monday in the first round of the Yadkin Valley Conference tournament.
Phillip Wallace scored nine of his 15 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to propel the Patriots (20-4, 9-1) past the Bucks.
Wallace made the game-tying basket as time expired to force overtime and then hit five of seven free throws in the four-minute extra frame.
Pinecrest was led in scoring by Faronte Drakeford, who posted a double-double with 31 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out.
Marshall Smith added 22 points -- half of those coming in the fourth quarter and overtime.
Tim Haggie (26 points) and Tarique Thompson (19 points) led the way for the Bucks.
Pinecrest and Hoke finished 1-2 in the Southeastern Conference standings. Both teams host second round conference tournament games at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
