U.P Girls Blow Out Byrd

The Union Pines girls finished their Cape Fear Valley Conference basketball campaign with a record of 10-2, after dealing Douglas Byrd a 71-8 beat down Thursday in Fayetteville.
It marks the second straight year the Lady Vikings finished with a mark of 10-2 in regular season league play. Overall the Vikings sport a 21-3 record heading into next week’s CFVC tournament, which starts Monday.
The Vikes led 21-4 through one period and took a 38-6 edge into intermission. Union Pines then yielded only two points over the final two frames, while scoring 33 points to finish the regular season with a bang.
Senior captain Tyesha McLean led the Vikes with 16 points and finished with five steals and four boards. Senior center Cristina Morcom and Chantele Carr each joined McLean in double figures with 11 points a piece.
Morcom also had eight rebounds, while Viking junior captain Crystal Hicks totaled eight points, eight rebounds, and three steals. Sophomore Tyler Ross led Union Pines with 10 boards and scored six points on the night.
The Vikes went 18 for 26 from the free throw line and committed just 8 turnovers after having 26 against Southern Lee last Friday. Union Pines had 10 players score in the game including: Tashi Whitney (7), Kelly Campbell (7) Amanda McCoy (2), and Dasia McCrimmon (1).
Tiffany Hicks, a freshman backup center scored two points and also had five rebounds in the tilt.
Western Harnett (17-5, 11-1 CFV) clinched the regular season league title and a first-round bye in the CFVC girls’ tourney, with a 50-46 Thursday win over Westover (11-11), which placed third with a league mark of 7-5.
Despite dropping just two league games by a total margin of four points, Union Pines finished as the regular season CFVC runner-up. The Lady Vikings will host seventh place Gray’s Creek (0-18, 0-12) 7 Mpnday at Bob Ward Gymnasium in opening round tournament action.Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

I bet the boys hoops team got beat as bad or worse than the football team. Grrrrrr .....

Tough season for the Vike boys. First season with a new coach, adjusting to a new system - and in a tough league to boot (Westover ranked #2, and So. Lee #5 in latest 3A poll, after that very competitive between the middle three).
I think give the boys a little time and they'll get there - they're young (only graduate one senior). They'll be back.
