Moore County's legislative delegation can expect another lobbying campaign from local animal welfare supporters.
State Sen. Harris Blake will be asked to support an amendment to Susie's Law, passed during the 2010 session of the N.C. General Assembly to tighten existing animal abuse laws.
Known as Chamber-lin's Bill, the amendment has been introduced by Sen. Don Vaughn, a Guilford County Democrat. Chamberlin is a Lab mix that suffered serious health issues after his owners abandoned him, leaving him chained in a High Point yard. The couple have since been charged with felony animal abuse.
Animal Advocates of Moore County is encouraging members to urge Blake to support the bill. The bill originated in the Senate, and AAMC is telling its supporters to work on state Rep. Jamie Boles if and when the bill reaches the House.
"Many NC counties do not have any laws on the books to protect animals so it is important to get this legislation passed to strengthen Susie's Law that was passed unanimously last year," said the AAMC in its latest e-mail message.
Susie, a pit bull-mix puppy, was beaten, burned and left for dead by a Greensboro man. She was the inspiration for the 2010 bill. The amendment would clarify and expand Susie's Law.
