Local Girls Take Honors at Competitions

Caroline and Mary Catherine Cox, daughters of Drs. Carson and Valerie Cox, of Southern Pines, were recently recognized with honors at both the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra and Durham Symphony Orchestra concerto competitions.
Caroline was a winner of the Raleigh Symphony Concerto competition with her performance of the "Sibelius Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47 mvt. I" and will perform with the Raleigh Symphony on May 1 at 7 p.m. in Jones Auditorium at Meredith College. Caroline was also a winner of the Durham Symphony concerto competition. She will perform with the Durham Symphony on March 6 at 3 p.m. in the Carolina Theater, 309 Morgan St., in Durham. Caroline is a junior at East Carolina University, majoring in both violin and piano performance. She studies violin with Ara Gregorian and piano with Dr. Keiko Sekino.
Her sister, Mary Catherine, received honorable mention for her performance of Mendelssohn's "Piano Concerto no. l in G minor mvt. I" at the Raleigh Symphony competition and for her performance of the "Bruch Violin Concerto no. 1 in G minor mvt. I" at the Durham Symphony competition. Mary Catherine is a high school senior. She studies piano with John Ruggero, of Raleigh, and violin with Ara Gregorian of East Carolina University. She plans to major in violin and piano performance at East Carolina University.
