Two individuals have been arrested after a stolen firearm was found during a routine traffic stop, according to a press release from the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s investigators charged Patrice Hoza Taylor, 18, of 908 Colonial Ave. in Aberdeen, and Bryce Marcel Lee, 18, of 1515 Mack Street, Spring Lake, with possession of a stolen firearm and carrying a concealed weapon, according to the release.

The arrest resulted from a traffic stop on Youngs Road in Southern Pines. Investigators located a stolen firearm in the vehicle. The firearm had been reported stolen during a break-in of a residence in Moore County.

Taylor’s secured bond was set at $10,000. Lee was given a written promise to appear. Both are scheduled to appear in Moore County District Court on Feb. 17.

I have the privilege of being able to conduct many traffic stops where I work. For me the traffic violations alone are normally the least of my concern. Although I take great pride in contributing to help decrease traffic fatalities and injuries to people andor property, I am ALWAYS looking for more or worse criminal offenses. I have found many weapons, drugs, wanted felons, etc. all during the process of traffic stops. That is why I and most LEOs take traffic stops very seriously!! Good job Deputies!! Stay safe!!

I assume they were heading to Spring Lake via Youngs Road?

Here's a great reason for a routine traffic stop!

The gun was stolen from a law abiding citizen. You really don't see the connection, do you.

@ JER, So do we punish the law abiding citizens by taking away their right to own a gun because someone would rather steal than get a job. Better lock up my steak knifes. Hard working law abiding citizens are the ones who suffer due to the acts of these criminals. The soultion to the problem would be to make the punishment for a crime strict enough to keep people from commiting them. Not take away the rights of the people who follow the laws.

Your first reaction is that your guns are going to be taken away. Is that the standard answer in the NRA handbook? If a gun is taken from an honest, law abiding citizens home, is it possible that gun was not totally secured? You are against having your guns taken away by the government but apparently have no problem with your gun being taken away by a thief. I am in complete and total agreement that we do not make the punishment for crime strict enough. However, there seems to be a big push by conservatives, Tea Party faithful and anyone else right of center that we must cut the size of government and drastically scale back spending. So we want to arrest and lock up people who commit crimes but we don't want to have to pay for the tools necessary to do that. You know, tools like police, courts, prisons. Sounds like the right (and the rest of us) has a conundrum. You want your cake and eat it, too. All I am asking is that people that insist on owning hand guns make it as difficult as possible for the bad guys to steal them. That doesn't cost anyone anything...except the owner of the handgun when he purchases a gun safe.

So having a hand gun inside MY house, behind MY locked doors isn't enough? I agree that to keep guns out of the hands of children, if anything, we should be extra vigilant. But, in all honesty, I should be able to have my doors wide open 24/7!!! It is MY stuff- if I didn't invite you in- then you are to stay out! I am so tired of people laying the blame on innocents while the criminals just keep on commiting crimes. We need to, as parents, teach our children right from wrong from the very beginnig and work harder on keeping two parent families whole, pray more, and DEFINITELY as a community put in place stricter punishments. I am not saying single parents can't do the job, I know several single moms who do it every day. I do think it all adds up though and the odds are stacked against them unfortunately.

JER- I have to respectfully disagree with you. I do agree with providing the capital to cover the extra costs of more prisons, police, etc. but I don't agree that gun safes will cure this ill.

If you had five pounds of gold bullion in your locked house, would you feel you had done enough to protect it? I agree with you that we can all do much more to teach our kids right from wrong and have much tougher enforcement of our laws. My point is that we must all be more responsible for our actions. Let's just take a common, everyday situation as an example. If you have prescription medication in your home, most likely it has a child proof lid that prevents little ones from opening the bottle. Would you argue against having this lid on the bottle? You had it in the medicine chest, out of sight of the kids. Would you feel that should be enough? Or would you say that the lid is good because it gives you a little extra security in preventing something bad from happening. Gun safes won't totally eliminate bad people from stealing guns but if it keeps any out of their hands, is that not a good thing?

It must be hell for you, living in fear all the time, clutching your weapons to your chest, jumping each time a car door closes or a knock comes to your door. I am truly sorry that you feel you must live like that. But feel free to shoot at any sound that frightens you because shooting at noises carries no penalties if you use the "I was afraid" defense.

Don't worry ChiefHammer, JER is too proud to cry or beg for his life. Plus, he has his trusty boy scout's whistle to instantly alert authorities...

You two are pathetic.

What would stop a armed intruder? Maybe the sight of a balding, saggy-skinned, older fella, in his underwear, waving a spatula (hopefully not the plastic kitchen variety, a two and a half foot stainless steel outdoor grill type) blowing his trusty whistle, til he's blue in the face!! I wouldn't wish that on anybody...

Why has no one asked if the guns were stolen while someone was on the way to church? ;-)

0

JER 2 years, 3 months ago

Yep, that's it: everyone left of center are cowering sheep, everyone right of center are macho superheroes. So why do the macho people need weapons to protect themselves? Oh, that's right, it's the weapons that make them macho. I bet you were the Barney Fife of your military unit and your CO (Andy?) kept your bullet for you.

lmao what a nerd. sure he thinks he's such a bad a**

JER 2 years, 3 months ago

Really!! That "knowledge" may not be as common as you think. And I was was bad mouthing you, not the military. Now return to your duties of running from window to window checking to see if any bad guys are trying to infiltrate your position.

Gun owners have a responsibility to keep their firearms secure. Guns not only protect you from crime, but can also make you a target. Guns bring alot of money on the black market, thus making you a target for crime. Kind of a catch 22. These people that are buying them legally, then having them stolen need to be educated, and are not what I would call responsible gun owners. It's not really a left vs. right argument (although it seems they would love to take them away), it is more about common sense and not leaving your weapons unsecured.

Taking away the rights of responsible gun owners is not the answer. Punish the people who let those guns get into the wrong hands/and or use guns for crimes.

I agree eflat7. My Dad, a 44 year Navy/Army veteran and a Jacksonville Beach policeman too taught his children about responsibility of firearms, instructing us in their use but, not allowing us to keep them as protection. He said that was the job of the military/police to protect the citizens. Having a firearm would only get us killed if we (as civilians) attempted to protect our possessions and ourselves.

I agree totally that a gun owner should keep their guns in a safe place, especially around children or visitors in the home. I think that behind the locked doors of my home is a safe place. But the problem is that no matter how good you lock something up, it can still be stolen. Car, gun, jewelery, etc. The problem is not how good you lock something up, the problem is that there is someone sorry enough to steal. Deal with the problem. Just because something is not locked up or put in a safe does not give anyone the right to steal it, period. If I want to keep my guns on my kitchen table or in my front yard, I can. That does not give anyone the right to take it. It really disturbs me that instead of doing something to get rid of someone stealing, we beef up our security measures around our home. I have a block of kitchen knives on my kitchen counter, which could be used as a weapon, should I hire a security gaurd to watch them while I am not at home. Answer, no. I dont care what type of security you have, you cant stop a theif. With harsher punishment for those convicted of crimes, the problem will stop.

0

fred 2 years, 3 months ago

JER, you are absolutely right on providing more prisons, police officers, ETC. One thing that we agree on is that harsher punishment for criminals will drop the crime rate. With a drop in crime rate, over time the amount of criminals would decrease, in turn cutting cost.

Prison should be punishment, not a vacation. Prisoners get 3 meals a day, heat/AC, satellite tv, workout equipment, early leave for good behavior, a chance to earn a degree, medical care, and the list goes on and on. Where in the hell is the punishment in that? If I get all of that, maybe I should commit a crime. I do not have a problem with paying for more police, or whatever it takes to keep my family safe, but I do have a problem paying for someone to live a life with all these ammenties that has commited a crime against me or anyone else. Until this problem is fixed, there will always be criminals.
