U.P. Girls Pick Up Important 'W'
The Union Pines’ girls basketball team picked up a crucial Cape Fear Valley Conference road win against the Westover Wolverines, Tuesday in Fayetteville.
With the 31-25 victory, the Lady Vikings rebounded from a 41-39 road loss at the buzzer to league leading Western Harnett late last week while improving to 19-3 overall on the season and remain in second place in the CFVC with a mark of 8-2.
The win also gave the Vikes a spilt with Westover (9-10, 5-4) on the regular season, as the Wolverines topped Union Pines 39-37 in overtime at Cameron to snap nine-game Lady Viking win streak
Tuesday’s CFVC clash between the visiting Vikes and Westover was a low-scoring, defensive struggle from the onset -- one that remained closely contested until the final minutes of the fourth frame.
The Vikes led 7-4 through one period and took a 12-11 advantage at intermission. Through three quarters of play Union Pines had a 22-19 lead.
Sophomore Tyler Ross came up big on the boards for Union Pines in Tuesday’s tilt. She finished with a game high 16 rebounds on the night and also led the Vikings in scoring with nine points.
Lady Viking center Cristina Morcom only scored two points, but they were a big two points. In the fourth quarter the senior caught a pass from captain Crystal Hicks and buried a jumper that gave Union Pines a 26-23 edge with 3:53 remaining.
Later, a Hicks’ defensive board led to a transition lay-in by Viking senior captain Tyesha Mclean that pushed U.P.’s margin to 28-23 at the 1:45 mark of the final period. With 1:04 left on the clock McLean drove and converted another layup, making the score 30-23 and all but sealing the deal for Union Pines.
McLean finished with six points, seven assists and three steals on the night, while Hicks had eight points, five rebounds and five steals.
Senior Tashi Whitney, who is a regular starter for Union Pines, (along with Hicks, McLean, Morcom and Ross), tallied six points, four rebounds and three steals. Morcom had two points, four rebounds, three blocks and four turnovers in the tilt.
Freshman forward Tiffany Hicks and senior guard Kelly Campbell were the only two Vikes to see significant time off the bench. Sophomore Dasia McCrimmon did play 2-plus minutes in the final quarter, however none of the Vikings reserves got on the scoreboard on the night, as U.P.’s starters provided all the points in the contest.
Westover was paced by a 10-point outing from Jasmyn Trawick. The senior guard also had five assists, five rebounds and three steals.
The Union Pines Viking boys’ basketball team was outgunned from the start of its league matchup with Westover on Tuesday night. Through one period, Westover led 16-3 and took a 27-7 lead into intermission.
Eventually the homestanding Wolverines won 66-19, improving to their overall record to 17-2 on the season and 8-1 in CFVC play.
With the loss the Vike boys are now 6-16 overall and 3-7 in league action. Both Union Pines’ teams return to action Friday for Senior Night against CFVC foe Southern Lee. Things are schedule to start with the girls’ game, which tips off at 6 p.m. on the court of Bob Ward Gymnasium in Cameron.
