The Pinecrest wrestling team is 4-0 in the Southeastern Conference after Wednesday night’s tri-meet at Richmond where the Patriots defeated both the Raiders and Scotland County.
With the original meet against Scotland canceled because of weather, Pinecrest rose to the challenge of facing two high schools on the same night and dominated with a 60-16 win over Scotland followed directly by a 67-10 win over Richmond.
The first dual of the night pitted Pinecrest against Scotland, which posted a six-point lead right away when Zak Watts (28-1), ranked sixth in the state’s 4A classification, stuck Pinecrest’s Zac Lupien (24-4) in the first period in the 112- weight division.
The Patriots were able to match that with a pin by 119-pound sophomore Cody Fitzgerald (9-11) over Deshawn Williams (13-7) before giving up a forfeit and 6 points to Scotland at 125-. Wrestling at 130 pounds, freshman Dallas Roemer (28-4), who is currently ranked No. 7 in 4A at 135-, was able to pin Bobby Diggs (15-13) in the third period.
Junior captain Garret Bateman (22-6) pinned Conrad Chance (2-3) in the first period to give Pinecrest 12 more points and a six-point lead.
Scotland forfeited the 140-pound and 145-pound weight classes and 12 points to Pinecrest, bringing the score to 30-12, before gaining their last four points of the dual when Nick Kee (35-2), ranked No. 2 in all divisions at 152 pounds, won a 0-9 major decision against freshman Rider Excell (21-12).
At 160 pounds, senior Nathan Frederique (19-8) pinned Tyler Dennis (5-2) in the second period, and at 171 pounds, sophomore Ryan McQuire (5-10) pinned Deon Johnson (0-1) in the third period to add 12 more to the Patriot lead.
The last three weight classes, 189-, 215-, and 285-pounds, were forfeited by the Scots to give the Pats 18 more points and bringing the final score to 60-16.
The Patriots kept their momentum as they went right into their next dual of the night against Richmond.
Each team began with six points up on the scoreboard when Pinecrest forfeited the 103-pound match and Richmond forfeited the 112-pound match.
At 119 pounds, Cody Fitzgerald earned the Pats another six points with a pin in the third period against Randell Altman (6-17) before they gave up another forfeit at 125 pounds to even the score again.
Dallas Roemer pinned Richmond’s Austin Lane (5-11) in the first period in the 130-pound weight class to give Pinecrest the lead, then another Raider forfeit at 135 pounds doubled it.
Pinecrest sophomore Jonah Caliri (7-7) won a 7-3 decision over Tyler Cates (6-8) for another three points, followed by Richmond’s last forfeit at 145 pounds, bringing the score to 33-12.
The next three matches gave 18 points to the Pats with pins delivered by Rider Excell to Devontae Watkins (4-7) in the first period, by Nathan Frederique to Jacob Staub (6-8) in the first period, and by Ryan McQuire to Kenneth Hester (6-7) in the second period.
At 189 pounds, Patriot sophomore Hawk George (4-11) earned four team points with a 10-2 major decision win over Darryl Locklear (4-8) followed by two final Pinecrest pins, at 215 pounds and 285 pounds, by sophomore Luke Fetla (21-9) in the third period against William Wright (7-8) and by junior Calvin Farlow (2-0) in the second period against Lucas Newton (3-3), who cost Richmond two team points when he was ejected for flagrant misconduct, bringing the final score to 67-10.
The Patriots will face Hoke High School at 6 p.m., on Wednesday, at Pinecrest for Senior Night and their final conference meet of the 2010-11 season.
Pinecrest will then host the Southeastern Conference tournament on Saturday.
