A Vass man died Thursday after he lost control of his motorcycle and it struck a pickup truck on McCaskill Road near Sandhills Farm Life Elementary School.
Robert Leighton Campbell, 52, of the 600 block of Morrison Bridge Road, Vass, was pronounced dead at FirstHealth Moore Regional after being transported there by ambulance following the wreck, said trooper K.J. Evans of the state highway patrol.
Campbell was traveling south on McCaskill at 9:30 a.m. when the accident happened, Evans said.
“He laid it over on its side, but I’m not sure exactly why,” Evans said. “He crossed the center line and then sideswiped a pickup truck.”
Evans said Campbell wasn’t exceeding the 55-mph speed limit.
The northbound truck, driven by John Michael Lassiter, 56, of the 400 block of Joel Road, Carthage, ran off the road and struck a tree after the collision. Lassiter complained of minor pain but was not treated at the scene, Evans said.
After the accident authorities closed the road between N.C. 22 and Farm Life School Road.
