The Union Pines junior varsity girls’ basketball team picked up two home wins over conference foes last week.
The Lady Vikings defeated Gray’s Creek 45-15 Thursday and Overhills 44-37 on Tuesday to improve their record to 6-0 for the season.
In the Thursday win, jumped out in front of the winless Bears 16-4 at the end of the first quarter. Rachel Breasseale led the Vikes to the quick lead, snagging four steals and scoring eight points.
The second unit played the second quarter for the Vikes, as the lead was pushed to 25-6 at halftime. The margin increased to 35-7 by the end of the third quarter.
In the second half, freshman post player McKayla Kraft scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the way for the Vikes. Anna Jackson had four points in the fourth quarter for the Vikes.
Breasseale had 11 points to lead the Vikes in scoring. Leading rebounders were Nia Mosley with nine, while Katlyn Benton and Kraft had seven each. Charlotte Holder added six rebounds.
In Tuesday’s win, it was a battle featuring the speed of the Jags versus the size of the Vikings. Overhills claimed a narrow one-point lead, 10-9, at the end of the first frame.
The Vikings turned up the defensive pressure in the second period, holding the Jags to four points, while Carrie Marks scored five for the Vikes, who led 17-14 at halftime.
The Vikings pushed the lead to 10, 31-21, by the end of the third quarter.
But in the fourth quarter the Vikes, who battled foul trouble all game long, lost three guards who fouled out, forcing the Vikes to go deep on the bench. Viking coach David Pope said the subs did a good job of holding off a pressing Overhills’ defense down the stretch as the Vikings hung on to claim the 44-37 win.
Marks finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Holder chipped in with six points and 12 rebounds. Also helping the Viking cause was point guard Jackson, in for starter Megan Harris who was in foul trouble for most of the contest. Jackson finished with 10 points, three steals and three assists.
