Union Pines Hoopsters Sweep Bears

Union Pines picked up a Cape Fear Valley Conference sweep in varsity roundball action Wednesday against Gray's Creek in Hope Mills.

In a 62-33 Lady Vike runaway win, co-captain Tyler Ross had a career-high 29 points, along with 17 rebounds and 10 steals to notch a triple-double. The 5-foot-10 junior forward also doled out five dimes and picked up three blocks.

Ross had 10 points, five steals and two assists through the the first quarter as the Vikings built a 21-6 lead. She finished the half with 18 points, eight boards and seven steals.

Union Pines' other captain, 5-foot-8 Crystal Hicks, had a formidably versatile day playing point-forward. The senior totaled 10 points, eight assists, eight boards, and seven steals.

With the victory, the Lady Vikes improved to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in league competition.

The Vike boys trailed Gray's Creek 27-13 through one quarter in the nightcap, but ultimately fought back for a 74-66 victory to complete the CFVC sweep.

At the 6:50 mark of the second period Union Pines dropped way down and almost out, before battling back from a 35-17 deficit to tie the game at 41-all at the half.

From there the Vikings' run continued as Union Pines built a 56-50 lead through three periods of play. Matthew Maness (2) and Lashun Brower (2) combined to sink four treys in a critical stretch -- spanning the late third quarter and early-mid fourth -- that proved essential in putting Union Pines over the top.

Parris Manning put on a dazzling display in his first game back. An ankle injury sidelined the 6-foot-3 senior captain for Union Pines' previous three tilts, but Manning returned to the starting lineup Wednesday to finish with 21 points, seven assists, seven rebounds and three steals.

Junior 6-foot-4 Viking guard Braxton Ross also had a huge night with 16 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks.

With the victory the Vike boys' improved to 1-1 in CFVC play and 5-2 overall.

Both Union Pines teams finish off the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule Friday, with a league doubleheader against the Southern Lee Cavaliers in Sanford starting at 6 p.m.

I thought the game was at Southern Lee. I see it as a home game on the Southern Lee website. What's the deal??? UP needs to quit tweaking the schedule whenever they feel like it!
