The Pinecrest girls and boys both overwhelmed Lee County in basketball games played in Sanford Thursday evening.

As they have throughout a 5-2 start to the season, the Patriot girls suffocated the Jackets with their defense on the way to a 51-32 victory. For the second time this week, Janea Williams blocked nine shots in a game. The 6-foot-3 junior packaged that total together with 20 points, 18 rebounds and two assists.

The Pats owned the paint at both ends with 6-0 Felicia Painter adding 16 points, nine boards and two blocks. The pair were a combined 14 for 23 from the field. Coach Mike Loutzenheiser’s squad nearly pitched a shutout in the second quarter when a pair of free throws after the buzzer sounded produced the only Jacket points.

Keegan Lynch led the winners in assists with six. Megan Thomas had four steals and Zuri Thomas came off the bench to grab 10 rebounds and add three points.

The Patriot boys, now 2-5, shocked the home team by exploding to a 28-5 first-quarter lead in their 76-50 win in the nightcap. Adam Cummings and Sam Brower were a combined five for five from behind the arc during the first eight minutes. Cummings scored a career-high 25 points on only 11 shots from the field as he drained all seven of his three-point attempts.

The Jackets cut the Patriot lead to 36-26 on a buzzer-beating three by Chase Arrington to end the first half. But a steal by Jermaine Martin on the opening possession of the third period led to a basket by Justin Ray and the start of a 6-0 run. Cummings made two more treys in the period as the Pats expanded their lead back to 23 points going into the final quarter.

Greg Barnes and Brendan Ortiz each finished with nine points and Traivon Williams added eight to go with as many rebounds for coach Andrew Lacey’s squad.

Both Patriot teams return to action on Saturday when they entertain Southern Lee, beginning with the girls’ contest at 6 p.m.

Led by Victoria Thigpen with 19 points the Pinecrest girls’ junior varsity team defeated Lee County 52-40 at home Thursday evening.
