Funeral Service Monday for Slain Moore County Deputy

Funeral services for a Moore County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed Thursday afternoon near Lobelia will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Owens Auditorium at Sandhills Community College.

Deputy Rick Rhyne, 58, a was shot by Martin Abel Poynter, when Rhyne attempted to arrest Poynter on a child support warrant after responding to a trespassing call at a home in the 700 block of Morrison Bridge Road. After shooting Rhyne, Poynter shot and killed himself.

Rhyne was pronounced dead at FirstHealth Moore Regional Emergency Room shortly after the shooting. He was the first Moore County deputy to be killed in the line of duty.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines.

A memorial fund has also been established in Rhyne's name. Anyone wishing to make a donation to the “Deputy Rick Rhyne Memorial Account may deliver it to any First Bank, or mail it to First Bank, P.O. Box 125, Carthage, NC 28327.

thats a good idea this is a terrible thing i lived next to the killer when i lived in lobelia he was very to himself and strange,i also knew rick he was a wonderful person my heart goes out to his family this is a sad situation that did not have to happen

I also accept this challenge. Rick was a co-worker and a wonderful person in every aspect. He will be missed everyday and never, ever forgotten, My heart and prayers go out to the Rhynes. Just know that Rick will always be with all us in our hearts.
