Vikings Second in Grappler Tournament

The Union Pines wrestling team placed second at the Green Hope Grappler individual tournament Saturday in Cary.

The Vikings had five champions, two runners-up, and two third-place finishers to tally 191 points at the 14-team tournament.

Sanderson won the event with 227 points, while host school Green Hope placed third with 118.5. Both high schools are in the 4-A ranks while Union Pines is in the 3-A division. In the most current 3-A polls, Union Pines is ranked second in the coaches’ dual team poll and sixth in retrorankings.com’s tournament team rankings.

The Vikings’ five first-place wrestlers included 113-pound freshman Sam Bartram, along with seniors Jaiden Lindsey (126), Philip Mondi (132), Mike Brennan (182) and 220-pound winner Josh Huskey.

Both Brennan (8-0) and Lindsey (9-0) remained undefeated on the season with their tourney wins.

Sophomore Paul Ambrose (120) and senior Ryan Hull (126) took home second-place trophies in their weight classes Saturday for UP, while senior Billy Hornbaker (106) and junior Ian Burch (160) placed third in their respective divisions for the Vikes.

Union Pines returns to the mat Thursday for its 3-A Cape Fear Valley Conference dual-team conference opener against Douglas Byrd at Bob Ward Gymnasium in Cameron at 6:30 p.m.
