The Kiwanis Club of the Sandhills recently celebrated Kiwanis Night, a review of the year's accomplishments, a farewell to officers whose terms expired, and installation of new officers and board members.

Outgoing President Charlie Carlton expressed satisfaction with a successful year of fundraising for children's charities, new local projects, and a new Kiwanis International Service Project.

He commented on two new fundraisers: blueberry sales (June) and a raffle for Moore County children, which raised more than $10,000.

The club supported the annual Picquet Music Festival scholarships, the Junior Builders Cup award, and the John Williams Scholarship. Each of these activities recognized outstanding young people. The annual Builders Cup award, recognizing an outstanding citizen, went to Mark Wethington.

Carlton presented the Kiwanian of the Year award to Susan Holmes, recognizing her distinguished service to the club for seven years as secretary - a challenging and important position for any Kiwanis club.

The guest of the evening was Lt. Gov.-Elect Ken Jenkins, of Seven Lakes, and his wife. Lt. Gov. George Hillard retired the officers and board members completing their terms and installed the new leadership.

The new club president is Jim Lewis, of Southern Pines. Other new officers include Suzy Carlton, president-elect; Paula Crocker, secretary; Ginny Thomasson, treasurer; Leigh Baggs, assistant secretary-treasurer; Johnny Burns, Michael Cotton, Kirby Kilpatrick and Nathan Summers, board members.

President Jim Lewis outlined plans for another successful year serving the children of Moore County.
