Why is gasoline still so expensive in the Pinehurst area? We can drive to Tramway and save 10 to 14 cents a gallon.

Lilian that is a very good question. There are two reasons that gas is so high. First is the oil company’s greed and second is the tax that is imposed on us by the state and federal government at the gas pump. At the pump in North Carolina we pay a tax of 18.4 cent tax to the state, and 35.3 cent tax to the federal government on every gallon that we pump. We also pay a county and highway usage tax on every gallon that we pump. The fact of the matter is that the oil companies and our government is holding us hostage because of our dependences on foreign oil. Prior to the seventies gas was less than a dollar a gallon here in the United States. People in Europe at that time were paying three or four dollars a liter. So the oil companies created a gas shortage to raise the price of gas here in the United States and they have never looked back. Every time that want to bump up the price another dollar they create a shortage. When they get the price that they want they relax the price but it never go back to where it was before the shortage. The oil companies make billions of dollars profit each year after expenses. The government is afraid to put a ceiling on gas because the oil companies will band together and create a shortage. I know you remember the supply and demand class in economic 101. IF you do that is why we are paying so much at the pump for gas.
