After starting last season on the brink, the Union Pines girls’ golf team opened its 2011 campaign with a victory Monday in a tri-school, nine-hole nonconference match in Sanford.

The Vikings’ winning total was 164. Lee County posted a 167 to place a close second, while Southern Lee tallied a 170.

“Although the scores were not where we want to get,” Vike head coach Raymond Groseclose said, “we are extremely pleased to be competitive with Lee County and Southern Lee. I was also pleased with the efforts of our other girls, who were not far behind in their scores.”

Match medalist Lindsay Dakin led Union Pines. The sophomore all-conference selection from last season finished with a score of 50.

Senior Mackenzie Koppenhofer and sophomore Channah Valkos both carded 57s for the Vikings

“I know our scores can improve,” Groseclose said, “but the big thing is to develop a winning attitude. It is important to think you are going to win.

“Hopefully we can build from here.”
