An Open Letter to the President

These are troubled times. The bottom has dropped out of the market. Congress is on vacation, which is just as well since they have basically caused this problem.
If you look to the American people, “this problem can be turned around overnight.” We the people have always stepped up to the plate when asked, and we need to be asked now.
The negative advertising, wrapped in the American flag, that has been going around is outrageous. It’s the worst kind of deceit. Is it any wonder that people around the world are wondering what happened to this great nation?
Address the nation and remind them, “This is for the people and by the people.” The government cannot do this alone. We need everyone together. We did it during World War II and we can do it now. Ask every small, medium and large company to place an ad in the paper saying, “We have a job for you.” Be a patriot. You have the means to do this for your country that needs your help now.
A concerned citizen,

This is one approach to job creation. If someone in a powerful central position can instruct businesses to do this, and they don't go broke, socialism works. (Communism controls all aspects of life, but socialism only controls the means of production.)
In the free market system, the business owner puts his life savings at risk, and larger companies risk other people's money also. Supply and demand determines when jobs are created.
But the president still has a part. He needs to OPEN THE WAY by getting the government regulations and restrictions removed that he has instituted DURING HIS TERM. It wouldn't hurt to adopt a fiscal policy that eliminates the deficit spending.

Government regulations and restrictions are in place as a result of businessmen not doing "the right thing" in the first place. Removing them will simply permit businessmen from doing anything they deem necessary to make a profit, with the worst case scenarios having businessmen doing dangerous things in order to make obscene profits. Be very careful what you wish for.
DaveyNC 1 year, 9 months ago
At what point do profits become obscene?
Given that taxation, regulation and the uncertainty about what Obama and Washington may do next has calcified our economy, don't you think that it might be a good idea to ease off a bit on the 150,000+ pages of regulations created by Obamacare alone?

When more is earned than expected.
DaveyNC 1 year, 9 months ago
So if I earn $101 in profits when I expected $100, that is obscene? Ridiculous. If a company beats its earnings projections are they supposed to turn over the "excess" to some governmental panel of wise men who know better what to do with it than the competent men who produced that "excess"?
JER 1 year, 9 months ago
If the profits exceeded expectations, that means "the competent men" overcharged for their product or service. They had made an error in preparing their business plan. If you are of the belief in "charging whatever the market will bear", then none of this discussion will make any sense to you.
irkim13 1 year, 9 months ago
So making more money than expected is somehow a bad thing? Success is a bad thing? Success is a result of an error? Why is it assumed making more money than expected is a result of overcharging and not just a result of providing a good product that people want? I have always believed a product is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
Also if a person makes "obscene" profits it is their money, not the Governments.

I guess you are all correct and I was wrong. If you are happy with how things are, then don't change a thing.
DaveyNC 1 year, 9 months ago
So whose profits are more obscene, Exxon's or Apple Computer's?
TOYTIME 1 year, 9 months ago
Wow...
jimt 1 year, 9 months ago
Your first sentence makes no sense. It's unintelligible.
Can you name some of the regulations and restrictions that you believe Obama has instituted DURING HIS TERM that hinder job creation?

jimt-
I have to agree. It's all Republican talking points, but really isn't that big a deal. I run a pretty good sized company, and can assure you, the reason I'm not hiring is lack of consumer demand and need for more workers, not government regulation. In fact, things like the Dodd-Frank bill are basically toothless - they really don't affect how we think. Obamacare? I wasn't crazy about government mandated health care, but will bet you that less than 1% of business owners or corporate executives can tell you how the bill will eventually affect their costs - or care. It's all at the margins, and the bigger issue is all the people out of work who aren't interested in spending anything. It's a vicious circle, but government can do only a few things to put more people to work - either employ them directly (ain't going to happen anymore), spend money on infrastructure and other things we need to employ them (isn't going to happen in the current political environment), or create a lot of tax incentives and encouragement to companies to employ them. The latter is preferable to us all, but the din to immediately drastically cut the debt isn't going to allow any of that to happen. Instead, the only thing left is "get out of the way" (reduce all regulations drastically), but that has only an indirect effect, and can have some really unintended consequences as well.

CaddieMaster you are a new breath of fresh air. Keep participating. As you do so, you'll learn, sadly, that many regular contributors, like TreadLightly(sic), are classic "LIVs" (low information voters), "Bachmannize" their arguments, i.e. they just make up facts when it suits their purposes because they assume that their audience doesn't know the facts either, and generally know little about law, economics (micro and macro), the Constitution (which they just adore, just so long as it doesn't give rights to people they don't like), American history, and geopolitics. Other than that, they're a really fun bunch.

I was referring to TreadLightly's first sentence.

Dear Concerned Citizen, I love what you say. There is so much division among people of this country. I wonder and worry of what the future really holds. As far as the sarcastic cracks and the negativity, "Haters are Gonna Hate" It's sad but true. God Bless us all.

I believe we all make a difference as consumers. I am making a habit of purchasing goods made in the USA. Look at the labels of clothing, when is the last time anyone wrote a letter or email to a company regarding where manufacturing is located? Those overpriced designer handbags ladies have to collect are no longer made in the USA, most are in China, Malaysia, ect. Notice all the food items now packed in plastic? The glass industry in this country has closed dozens of plants because plastic is cheaper to ship, never mind that plastic causes health risks. The US government instructs companies how to relocate to foreign countries which robs US citizens of employment. Outsourcing jobs to other countries is in our face every time we dial customer service for problematic issues. Shame on us, we can make a difference if we take the time & trouble to make choices for Our Country in all our purchases. Each time the President or his family travel anywhere it is a tremendous expense for his entourage to protect them during appearances or trips. This family has been on the move constantly since they got to Washington. There is such a lack of respect for the tax money & social security funds, the steady stream of millions of dollars being paid to other countries. When did the USA become the Big Daddy to help all these countries? I don't see any countries coming to the USA's aid for our homeless, hurricane victims, tornado damaged areas. So many physicians & nurses travel to other countries for free health care & surgical procedures, dentists as well spend their vacations giving free dental care to other countries. We have forgotten about our own country and the many people who sometimes just need a job or a place to live.

Thank you for choosing products made in the USA. Your heart is in the right place. Unfortunately, several of your other comments lack credibility. Why would you think our government "instructs" companies to locate off shore? Why would you think the current president and/or his family have traveled more than previous presidents? Why were you not concerned with the steady stream of dollars going to foreign countries before now? Other countries do send help and aid to people in the USA, you just don't hear about it if you get your news from News Corp (Fox). As an example, Venezuela provided low cost home heating oil to poor families in the northeast during a very cold winter a few years ago. I do agree with you about the free health care that is available from the USA (both publicly and privately provided) for other countries. I think the rational being used by the decision makers is: the people in these other countries are poor and "victims" of their government, whereas the people in this country that need it are poor because they are too lazy to work and buy their own health care plan. I often wondered why, if I could send in $10.00 to a TV ad and feed a hungry child in Africa for a week, why couldn't I also feed a hungry child in North Carolina for that same contribution?

So I found this eye-opening bit of information the other day: http://goo.gl/qEsh4
Evidently, only 1.2% of American spending makes its way to Chinese coffers. I guarantee that someone here will misread this article.

The only PEOPLE who have failed America are the AMERICAN people. They stopped being smart when it came to Material Goods. They stopped being smart when they started to buy more things than they could afford. The banks created "Credit Cards" so people could puchase things when they didn't have any money handy....but they did expect them to pay for those things soon after they had charged them. Problem was, they charged and charged and charged. My father, an executive with a Fortune 500 Co. had an American Express Card in the early 60's. He flew on some of the first 707 Boeing Jets in the early 60's. It was a "Status Symbol" then and when someone "paid for things" with it you KNEW that that person usually had either a very good paying job or they were just rich. My father was the former of those but I do remember him telling me that he always paid them off when he got his paycheck. He NEVER carried any debt except for his mortgage payment. Then in the 80's the credit card companies started to let everyone have them, when they shouldn't have. Sad. The Fenton Glass Co. in Williamstown WV, has just turned their main furnace off for good. They had restructured in 2007 but could no longer compete. Another American manufacturer bites the dust. They had been here since 1905. Americans don't know how to buy or sell anything anymore. The UAE has donated $500,000 to the Joplin, MO school system so that they can buy laptop computers for the kids.

"Address the Nation and remind them...'' What a joke! Obama's words are basically worthless now, ''Words, just words'' Feb. 17, 2008
TreadLightly 1 year, 9 months ago
All I know is that gasonline is twice the price as when Obama took office, and NO ONE CAN GET A PERMT TO DRILL FOR OIL. Business needs a certain level of regulation to keep them honest. But to SHUT THEM DOWN seems a bit much.

Tread--great comment and right on the money. MC7-- for once I totally agree with your post...unfortunately you can't seem to admit that our government is doing the exact same thing...spending without paying when the bill comes due!! I keep saying we've GOT to cut the spending and the Liberals keep saying that we'll spend until our great grandchildren get the bill. They simply do not care!
