The 21st Century Community Learning Center at Christ Way Deliverance Church sponsored a learning and working style workshop for its staff.
The workshop was conducted by Helena Hendrix-Frye, a published author and expert in the field of working with children with special needs. Participants in the workshop were told that learning styles refer to an individual's most efficient method of learning; individuals use a variety of techniques when taking in information to be learned, interpreting the content, and when drawing conclusions about what has been learned; one of the keys to successful educational planning is to build on the strengths and abilities of students rather than focus on their weaknesses; students' preferences for learning should be matched with an appropriate instructional style; teaching strategies to an individual's learning style should be used to introduce, reinforce and review materials to be taught; and learning styles inventories are instruments that indicate ways in which individuals learn best, how they learn when interacting with others and the type of thinking pattern they use to solve problems.
Staff members were given a learning style inventory to determine their particular learning style. Information from this workshop will be used to further efforts to help students who attend the 21st CCLC after-school program at Christ Way Deliverance Church.
Frye is responsible for the development of this inventory, which is published and used nationwide. Visit http://www.careernetworks.com/.
