Nick Thompson shot a 7-under par 65 and teammate Dylan Harris posted a 66 as Pinecrest wrapped up an undefeated season in the Southeastern Conference at Pinecrest Country Club in Lumberton Monday afternoon.

Combined with a 73 by Zach Martin, and a 75 by Sam Kosich, the Patriots posted a season-low team score of 279. On an otherwise not exceptionally low-scoring day for conference golfers, Alex Meade shot a 78 and Josh Stockwell had an 82 for the Pats. The scores were competitive lows for both Thompson, a junior, and Harris, a senior, on the course set up for about 6,600 yards.

The conference title was Pinecrest’s 12th in a row. Coach Sandy Sackmann’s squad is scheduled to meet Union Pines in the Moore County Championship match at Pinehurst No. 6, starting at 2 p.m. next Tuesday. O’Neal and North Moore will not be participating this year. The Patriots go after their fifth consecutive regional championship, also at No. 6, on May 2.

Harris was the conference golfer of the year with a scoring average of 72.0. Also earning all-league honors from the Patriots were Thompson, second (73.7), Kosich, sixth (77.7), Martin, seventh (79.1) and Meade, eighth (79.3). Sackmann was honored as coach of the year.

Thompson’s round of 33-32-65 included five birdies, an eagle and no bogies. He holed out from a bunker for par on the 17th hole and needed only 24 putts.

“My goal today was just to go out there and shoot under par,” he said. “Then I started making birdies. I hit a lot of fairways, hit a lot of greens and made a few putts.”

Playing on the same course a week earlier, Harris shot a 79. In a dramatic reversal of form, his 36-30-66 included nine birdies. Two of his three bogies came on his last two holes of the day. He putted the ball only 22 times.

“I started with a couple of birdies and kind of got in a groove,” said Harris, who did not play in the same group with Thompson.

“I’m incredibly proud of the entire team,” Sackmann said. “They really worked hard this season.”
