Sports Briefs: SCC Spikers Sweep Lenoir CC

The Sandhills Community College volleyball team swept Lenoir Community College 25-15, 25-15 and 25-23 Saturday.

The win improved the Flyers' record to 10-5 on the season.

Miranda Love led the team with 15 kills. Sarah Thomas had seven and Mandy Blair had six.

Blair had four service aces, while Paige Horne had three. She also recored 26 assists.

Love also led the way in the digs department with 22. Thomas had 17.

The Flyers were scheduled to play Guilford Technical Community College - a big match - on the road Tuesday.

They return home tonight to play Brunswick Community College at 6 p.m.

SCC travels to Surry Community College on Saturday.

UP Netters Sweep Byrd

Union Pines closed out the week in convincing fashion Thursday with a 3-0 victory against Douglas Byrd in a league volleyball match.

The Lady Vikings improved their league record to 4-2 at the halfway point of the Cape Fear Valley Conference season and are now 9-5 overall on the year after the 25-17, 25-11, 25-15 sweep over the visiting Eagles.

In what turned out to be a veritable serving clinic, U.P. racked up 23 service winners, including 15 aces in the contest.

Sophomore Zazil Porras was one player that stood out for Union Pines, as she tallied four assists and six service winners, including four aces. Meredith Campbell had five aces, while fellow Vike junior Cassidy Walker collected four aces and three assists.

Junior Captain Crystal Hicks finished the night with five service winners, four digs and three kills for UP. Her sister, sophomore Tiffany Hicks, had six kills and three blocks on the night at the net.

Meanwhile, Bethany Daley finished with four assists and a dig, in her first varsity action of the season, after head coach Leslie Fish opted to pull her up from the JV team for the match.

Next up for Union Pines was a Tuesday home match with the Overhills Jaguars (9-3, 5-1), the second place team in the CFVC. Western Harnett is currently in the top spot of the league standings with a conference mark of 6-0.

Falcon Volleyball Falls

The O'Neal varsity volleyball team was defeated Monday in three games by Fayetteville Christian.

The scores of the three games were 19-25, 22-25, and 20 -25.

The girls played hard and had great saves, according to coach Kendall Harper.

Jackie Chamberlain led the team with eight kills and six digs, Katelyn Hunt had seven service aces and six digs, and KellyAnn Miller had 20 assists.

The Falcons were scheduled to play Village Christian Tuesday at 5 p.m.

PHS Netters Win Fifth Straight

The Pinecrest volleyball team (16-3) won its fifth match in a row 25-13, 25-13 and 25-12 at E.E. Smith Monday evening.

Addy George led the Patriot attackers with 14 kills. Janea Williams had 12, followed by Felicia Painter with six and Uniqwa Morrison with four.

Setting them up were Keegan Lynch with 11 assists, Megan Thomas with nine and Ashleigh McKenzie with seven.

The Patriots are scheduled to travel to Jack Britt for another nonconference match on Wednesday. They take a 4-1 conference mark into Thursday's contest at Lumberton.

FCA Night of Champions

Grace Church in Southern Pines is sponsoring the fourth annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Night of Champions tonight.

The program will begin at 6 p.m. with free pizza and drinks and end at 8 p.m. There will be live music and a talk by nationally known speaker Len Marinelli.

Everyone is welcome to attend this community-wide event.

Correction

Trevion Wooten, Tristan Mullins and Scott Hooper each intercepted a pass in the second half of last week's Pinecrest freshman football game against South View.

The brief in Friday's edition incorrectly credited Wooten with all three interceptions.
