The Pinecrest jayvee football team turned a fumble recovery and an interception into 14 quick points against visiting Western Harnett Thursday night.
Before it was over, Sam Brower picked off his fifth and sixth passes of the season, and Jacquis Alston recovered a fumble and returned an interception for a touchdown.
All of that added up to a 28-0 victory for the undefeated Patriots (4-0).
Jeremy Klimek was one of the defensive standouts, recovering an Eagle fumble at the Patriot 2-yard line. He also scored the first two touchdowns on runs of 14 and eight yards.
Alston’s fumble recovery came after a punt by teammate Steven Kennedy on the first series of the game.
Starting from the Eagle 38-yard line, a 20-yard burst by Juwanza Harris and a 10-yard completion from quarterback Matt Epley to Justin Ray put the Patriots inside the 20.
Klimek broke several tackles on a 14-yard touchdown run and Epley kicked the extra point for a 7-0 Patriot lead. The Patriots were knocking on the door again moments later when Brower intercepted a pass and returned it 15 yards to the Eagle 34. A 15-yard penalty was tacked on to the end of the play.
Three plays later, Klimek negotiated the final eight yards without being touched and Epley’s kick made it 14-0.
The Patriot offense turned the ball over the next two times it had the ball. But inbetween, Alston scored on a 50-yard interception return and the home team took a 21-0 lead into the halftime break.
Late in the third period, the Eagles had fourth down and about a foot at the Patriot 2-yard line. Klimek made the fumble recovery as the Patriot defense stacked up the Eagles.
On the first play by the Pats from the two, Klimek nearly took it the distance. He was tackled by the last man he had to beat after a 32 yard gain.
An apparent 70-yard scoring pass from Patriot quarterback Eli Black to tight end Frankie Painter was shortened to about a 20-yard gain by a block in the back infraction.
Midway through the fourth period, Brower’s second interception of the game set up an 11-yard touchdown run by quarterback Aaron Reimer.
