Pinecrest defeated Union Pines 5-4 on Monday in the first meeting between the schools in girl’s tennis since 2001.
The teams were tied at 3-3 after the singles matches held at the John S. Frye Tennis Facility. Ally Parziale and Mariotti Meyers, and Chrissy Nurnberg and Caroline Decker of the Patriots, won the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches to clinch the victory.
Parziale and Meyers also won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Gabby Adler took the No. 6 singles for the visitors.
Singles winners for the Vikings were Madi Kramer, Laura Cameron and Virginia Priest. Priest and Shannon Simpson won the final doubles match of the day, the last of three contests decided by tie-breakers.
Pinecrest improved to 4-1, while the previously undefeated Vikings dropped to 8-1.

Mr. Bergmann, As one of many proud parents of the Girls Varsity Tennis Team at PHS, I would like to thank you for traveling out to Union Pines High School to cover the Pinecrest match against Union Pines--one of the Region's longstanding tennis powers.
As your article indicates, the match was indeed as exciting as the score (5-4) would indicate, and the quality of play on both teams was truly exceptional.
I would only offer one small tweak to your article. The Pinecrest girls tennis record now stands at 4-1...not 4-2....as their pre-season loss to New Hanover, Wilmington was an unofficial scrimmage. (Minor point :)
Thanks for all you do for our community!!! --BG (RET) Bob Decker

Who did they drop a match to for the one loss? Cardinal Gibbons? I believe they are 3-0 in conference and that's the only other team I see on the schedule they've played thus far. Just curious because when I saw the schedule when it first came out, it just had the conference opponents listed and they were still working on adding some non-conference matches so I was just wondering if the one I'm looking at now is current.
Glad to see both the PC and UP girls teams get together again on the courts and resume playing one another. The boys have had some great battles over the past couple of years. Without question two of the top programs (girls and boys) in the region year in and year out.
Speaking of which, saw where PC also edged Scotland 5-4 last week in another nail-biter. The Scots have had a pretty strong girls program in recent years, and their boys team gave PC a battle this past spring. Great to see the girls don't have to travel too far to find good competition in this area. Best of luck to both teams the rest of the season.

Adman....you definitely know your tennis! The PHS girls tennis team did lose to Cardinal Gibbons, non-conference foe, in their first game of the season.
And yesterday afternoon, the Pinecrest girls defeated Richmond Senior 9-0. We now stand at 4-0 in the conference; 1-1 in non-conference matches. Today at 4:00 pm we play Hoke County. Go Patriots!!
Hooah!!! --Bob
