Despite a downpour on a recent Saturday afternoon in Asheville, two local teams from the Moore County area came out as the champions of the 2010 North Carolina Super Senior State Championships.

Matches were played on the courts of the Asheville Crowne Plaza and Aston Park Tennis facilities.

These players, all over 60 years old, really proved that tennis is indeed the sport for a lifetime.

Although the players represented National Tennis Club, they came from Pinehurst, Lawn and Tennis, Beacon Ridge and Pinewild.

The Ladies 6.5 Combo Team with captain Betty Milligan came away undefeated by winning all four of their matches.

Five teams from all over the state participated at this level. The players included Phyllis Cole, Rocene Stantangini (Sissy), Jan Staaf, Barb Campbell Keiffer, Catherine Thayer, Patty Dominguez, Rose Corcoran, Carol Dunbar, Cindy Kennedy and Betty Milligan.

The men's 7.5 team, also from National Tennis Club, competed against 11 other teams from all over the state. It won five of six matches en route to the title. The players included Bill Doerr (captain), Burgin Beale, Julian Carr, Rick Denker, Harry Fekkes, Tom Gallagher, John Neal, Ray Rosinski, Rocco Simone, Robert Stanik and Roger Mitchel.

Both teams will move on to the Southern Sectional Championships to be held in early 2011 in Mobile, Ala.
