Local Health Care Groups Host Breast Health Kickoff Event
Excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed type of cancer in women. It is estimated that there will be 207,090 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women during 2010.
In an effort to communicate the importance of breast health and regular mammogram screenings, FirstHealth of the Carolinas, Pinehurst Radiology and Pinehurst Surgical participated in an Aug. 18 breast health information session at the Moore Free Care Clinic in Carthage.
The event also served as a kickoff for a Sept. 12 fundraiser supporting breast cancer detection to be held at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club, No. 7.
Proceeds from the September event will be donated to the Moore Free Care Clinic to be used for screening mammograms. The Moore Free Care Clinic is a private, volunteer-based, nonprofit organization that provides primary health care services at no cost to limited-income residents of Moore County.
During the Aug. 18 kickoff, representatives from FirstHealth, Pinehurst Radiology and Pinehurst Surgical manned educational booths and provided information on such topics as how to do a self-breast exam, where to get a mammogram, up-to-date-techniques for breast biopsies and support groups.
The upcoming fundraiser at Pinehurst No. 7 will include music, hors d'oeuvres, a silent auction and a putting contest as well as a Step-aside Scramble.
"Our goal is to raise funds for Moore Free Care Clinic to provide screening mammograms to its patient roster," said Franny Stewart, a member of the No. 7 Breast Cancer Detection Event.
