Sept. 15 is the cutoff date to add names to the Moore County Veterans Memorial this year.
That’s the date when the memorial committee must turn in new names to be added to the slabs at the monument in Carthage, according to Joanne Atkins, publicity chairwoman. The names must be engraved in time for the Veterans Day ceremony in November.
Individuals wishing to add names to the monument are asked to call the Moore County Veterans Service Office at (910) 947-3257 for further information. The cost is $30 for each name.
Atkins says the committee has received an additional 45 names since the 2009 ceremony but is aware that other people are also eligible for inclusion.
GOP WOMEN — The Moore Republican Women’s Club will hear from GOP candidates running for statewide judicial office at its Monday, Sept. 13, meeting.
The meeting will be held at the Pinehurst Member’s Club, beginning with registration at 11:30 a.m. The luncheon will be served beginning at noon.
Guest speakers will be Barbara Jackson, candidate for N.C. Supreme Court; and Ann Marie Calabria, Rick Elmore, Steven Walker and Dean Poirier, candidates for N.C. Court of Appeals.
Cathy Wright, candidate for N.C. House District 54, will also attend. This is the seat held by House Speaker Joe Hackney, a Democrat. The district includes one and a half precincts in Moore County.
Luncheon cost is $16, with checks payable to Pinehurst Resorts LLC. Club leaders note that the cost is higher because of a tax increase.
Reservations should be called to Pauli Curl at (910) 215-9796 or by e-mail to paulicurl@nc.rr.com. Wednesday, Sept. 8, is the deadline to make reservations, and the cancellation date is noon on Sept. 11.
FORUM — The League of Women Voters is making arrangements for a candidates’ forum to be held Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. at the Pinehurst Town Hall Activity Center.
Candidates for school board and county commissioner will be invited to participate.
