Beck Tells the Truth

Thank you for your informative, opposing articles by Robert Levy and Jim Heim (Republican and Democrat party chairmen, respectively), and columnist Steven Smith. They bring varying opinions based on various “facts” and “statistics.”
Therein lies the rub. Statistics are often based on different parameters. To use a nonpolitical example, the life expectancy outside the United States, according to the World Health Organization, might be higher than expected because some countries don’t count in their calculation a baby who dies immediately or a few hours after birth.
I rely on Glenn Beck to give me accurate numbers and comparisons, because I know that his television show does not air information that they have not thoroughly checked and verified. Beck did not show the NAACP video that led to the firing of the Department of Agriculture’s Shirley Sherrod because they did not have her entire speech and the context in which the short video was made. They have limited their Van Jones videos and statements to those they have in entirety and in context.
In addition, I have learned a great deal of history that has not been told. Beck relies on primary sources, the writings and speeches of America’s founders and other historical figures. I have learned of free blacks’ and women’s participation in the Revolutionary War. I have learned that the “Great Depression” was only “Great” in the United States (because of FDR’s policies), but only a depression in the rest of the world.
Some may not like Beck’s antics or his repetition (which I need for my challenged memory), but I count on him to tell the truth. Besides, if he didn’t tell the truth, the news media would pounce on him.

Of course, quote anyone else other than Glenn Beck and people like Chief Hammer and Ms. Smetana will accuse you of being "in lockstep" or some kind of "Obamabot."
I like this take by Christopher Hitchens on Beck's recent rally:
"In a rather curious and confused way, some white people are starting almost to think like a minority, even like a persecuted one. What does it take to believe that Christianity is an endangered religion in America or that the name of Jesus is insufficiently spoken or appreciated? Who wakes up believing that there is no appreciation for our veterans and our armed forces and that without a noisy speech from Sarah Palin, their sacrifice would be scorned? It's not unfair to say that such grievances are purely and simply imaginary, which in turn leads one to ask what the real ones can be. The clue, surely, is furnished by the remainder of the speeches, which deny racial feeling so monotonously and vehemently as to draw attention."
Sounds like he's describing the Pilot comments section...
(I don't always agree with Hitch but I would powerfully hate to have him mad at me).

It won't get ugly from my end, ChiefHammer. Beck, Palin, et al are beacons of light in this dark, scary place. They have the answers to our questions and have run them by God for verification. How can we not turn our lives over to them. They have our very best interests at heart. The sooner that Glenn and Sarah are put in charge of solving our many problems, the better. Sarah will rein in the size and complexity of government to the point that all government work will be accomplished through a series of Tweets from the Wassilla White House. No need for extensive travel or vacations. Glenn will confirm via his daily TV show that evil has been overcome by the voice of the people but mostly through the will of God. All will be right with the USA. Oh, I can't wait!

Some of the "Truths" Glenn Beck tells:
"I mean, we've got czars now," Beck said during his July 22, 2009, program. "Czars like John Holdren, who has proposed forcing abortions and putting sterilants in the drinking water to control population."
Politifact gives this one the "Pants on Fire" rating: http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2009/jul/29/glenn-beck/glenn-beck-claims-science-czar-john-holdren-propos/

More "truth" from Beck:
"The government is trying to now close the Lincoln Memorial for any kind of large gatherings," Beck said. "This may be the last large gathering ever to assemble at the Lincoln Memorial. Historic, historic."

A: Fox News’ Glenn Beck said that the government will get complete access to your computer and all of your files when you log on to Cars.gov for the Cash for Clunkers program. Is there any truth to this?
A: This claim is false. Beck quoted from a security message on the site for dealers, not the site for the general public.

Good lord what a bunch of whining morons on both sides of this. Conservatives and Liberals attention: VOTE, then SHUT UP. Sheesh. So much bitching and moaning. If you don't like the current person in office, vote them out. If your guy does not get the most votes...DEAL WITH IT, and vote again next time, maybe your guy will win then. Its called democracy in action. What a bunch of babies.
And, if you decide that you would rather follow a "media personality" rather than somebody who actually runs for office on the left or right, remember that they are on your airwaves not because they are qualified or even intelligent or sane, its because they bring in ratings and can help the networks sell cars and detergent.

dustyrhoades 1 year, 5 months ago
James: "Beck accurately quoted Cembalast's study, but questioned Cembalast's methodolgy [sic]"
Sure...if by questioned, you mean "totally discredited".
But then, you're good at making up your own definitions:
"Biden is the VP, not a cabinet member to which Cembalast refers)"
http://uspolitics.about.com/od/presidenc1/a/the_cabinet.htm
"The modern cabinet includes the Vice President and the heads of 15 executive departments. In addition, five other individuals have cabinet rank. "
http://www.whitehouse.gov/administration/cabinet
The Cabinet includes the Vice President and the heads of 15 executive departments — the Secretaries of Agriculture, Commerce, Defense, Education, Energy, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Labor, State, Transportation, Treasury, and Veterans Affairs, as well as the Attorney General."
And, of course James ignores the other examples of Beck's untruthfulness, while trying to drag the discussion back to Jeremiah Wright. Again.
Here's a hint James: when you try to change the subject by falling back to a discredited old bit of wingnut race-baiting and scaremongering like Jeremiah Wright, you've pretty much lost the battle.

It really says something about the so-called liberal media's complete abrogation of its responsibilities when polls show that a comedian is a more trusted news source than any other.

My ~ my ~ Dusty, I must admit you are correct! Only 600,000 have viewed Becks' misinformed, maladjusted, personality complex along with misconstrued facts. Several on here may want to attend Beck's University. That's funny - I don't care who you are!
Jon Stewart is the only news reporter to report the facts, unlike Fox News Talking Heads.
For a small fee he will award a B%^& S*&% degree in National Government and Economics; Co-signed by no less than Rush Limbaugh. How’s that for fanatical leadership?
moonchild7 1 year, 5 months ago
Jon Stewart is from New Jersey and graduated from The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg,VA. He has a B.S. degree in Psychology.
Stephen Colbert is from South Carolina and has a B.A. degree in Communications from Northwestern University.
Neither of those facts make them any better or worse a person than Glenn Beck. But those facts do make them much better, "well-rounded" and more knowledgeable "ENTERTAINERS" than "The Beckster".
We all need a little "Comedy Central" in our lives today. Laughter IS the better medicine. A majority of the tv airwaves are full of too many mindless, tasteless, violent, and frabricated shows. Meaningless schlock everywhere.
Both Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert usually end their shows promoting excellent books, films or art & music to experience. At the end of his show doesn't Glenn try to sell you some of his "gear" from his store? Oh, sorry, that's O'Reilly.

If the republicans back sarah palin in 2012, I think they will lose the presidential election. I think this woman is a fake, and she comes across as dizzy at times. All her responses seem rehearsed and she lost my respect when she quit her job as governor. I am sure she may be a nice person but definitely not presidential material in my opinion! I dont listen to any of the fox news or msnbc know-it-alls because if they were that smart they would,or should, be running for office. How about a very smart businessman or woman, with no law degree, that understands we cant keep spending money we dont have. If you are out there you have my vote, regardless of what party you are affiliated with!

Wow, James. Post after post, six in all...all increasingly angry, and all directed at me. And all you manage to "point out' is some claim that Joe Biden didn't create jobs while he worked in the private sector...which was not the issue we were discussing. The issue was Glenn Beck lying when he "reported" some figure about the number of people in the Obama Cabinet who'd worked in the private sector. You haven't "check mated" anything.
Okay, James. It's Labor Day Weekend, Mmm'kay? So if I don't answer you right away, you don't need to get all bent out of shape and post a long string of messages with what you imagine I'm going to say. It just means I'm not spending all my time on the computer this weekend.

Mr. Beck has said he is a "commentator on life" not a reporter and has no obligation to report facts. Therefore I find this highly amusing that people are using this man's word as the gospel when he even admits he does not fact check. SO he goes only on opinion ok thats great. But we certainly can not call it an educated opinion.

Fox News has their airwaves filled to the brim with DUMB BLONDES in SHORT SKIRTS. Works every time when you need to keep your ratings up. Men are so gullible when it comes to walking/talking dingbats. I've actually MANY TIMES seen men in stores almost fall down in the aisles when those BLONDIES walk by. SAD. REAL SMART people watch and listen to REAL NEWS/OPINION PROGRAMS. The kind where a person needs a little bit of intelligence to comprehend the conversations, ideas, and concepts.
Oh, before I forget everyone, Check out Glenn Beck's video of his admiting to the fact that he "lie's a little", so he can make his stories "make more sense." Priceless, as he jokes around making everyone else seem like they are stupid when he tells them his "fibs" and believes them.

James based on your analogy of incredible federal spending, don't you think that the TEA ACTIVISTS should mandate that the MCBC send all of those federal stimulus dollars back to Washington? Unless you work in the Moore County Central Office or for the County of Moore or a receipient who is benefiting from the lift stations around Lake Pinehurst.
Lets see how the numbers look at this juncture: 88.2 million in school bonds - 40 million for this years budget + MOORE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION 5NC340327 Department of Agriculture Grants $26,650.85 S 2 MOORE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION S386A090033 Department of Education Grants $39,436.00 S 3 MOORE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION S394A090034 Department of Education Grants $3,165,640.00 S 4 MOORE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION H392A090096 Department of Education Grants $102,228.00 S 5 MOORE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION S389A090033 Department of Education Grants $1,562,917.00 S 6 MOORE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION H391A090092 Department of Education Grants $2,598,197.00 S 7 MOORE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION S387A090034 Department of Education Grants $18,266.00 S
"Unfortunately, they do have to report the 9.6 unemployment numbers and the incredible federal spending that The Chosen One is responsible for." ~~~like the absence of oversight of Wall Street that created our economic stagnation? James ~ yea of little faith...drive around Pinehurst and take a look at the workers erecting water towers, installing lift stations around Lake Pinehurst, the local Employment Service - Job Links. All those jobs highlighted in "yellow" are federal stimulus money jobs.
Central Office and Pinckney are bulging at the seams with money. But according to Susan Purser, the schools need more money.
So James ~ why doesn't the TEA ACTIVISTS FANATICS lobby the MCBC to send Obama's Stimulus Money back to Washington? Oh ~ they are benefiting locally from those funds and that's alright with them....

James => and you have George W. to thank for Chinese debt. You didn't have your 401K in the hands of Hedge Fund Inverstors by chance? Just a little oversight during the Bush Administration which contributed to standing on the edge of another Great Depression - worthless denero, you know what I mean. Tell me please, are there any "derivitive swaps" [uninsurend paper] on Wall Street now? No - thanks to POTUS'O but George had his retirement from oil and gas to consider. Remember $5.00 a gallon in Novemeber and December before POTUS'O was sworn-in January 09? Wow - if he were the Golden Child he could have waved his hand and made 8 years of esculating debt vanish in an instant. Recall George had a reserve when he came into office thanks to "Sweet Willie Clinton".
Have you seen the recovery in the auto industry from Stimulus money? Not just auto makers but their suppliers as well ~ all the way down to the Goodyear Plant in Fayetteville. Cars need tires. They also need caulking around the glass to prevent water penetration. So I take it you didn't ride around Pinehurst to see all of that Stimulus Money in action! Great big water tank on Monticello...it will look better when it's painted, with Stimulus Money Green.

Many, many, many factors have gotten our economy in the gutter. First and really foremost has been the FACT that the minimum wage has NOT kept pace with the cost of goods/services.....creating the artifical need for CREDIT CARDS. It was artifical alright....right into the POOR HOUSE for an over abundance of Americans who used them to try to "keep up".
Next has been the FAKE ECONOMY that was created in the late 90's and that another huge group of Americans "bought into"; sadly, who have now been thrown out of. What is a FAKE ECONOMY? 1. The Dot-Com business's, over-priced name brand objects and mindless useless dribble. 2. House buying/flipping for fabulous profits(except that in most of the cases those price increases were NEVER tied to the reality that the house itself might be almost worthless). 3. Tax breaks for the wealthy. 'Nuff said
FAKE President as in G.W. BUSH. I wish we could have sued the US Supreme Court for their DISASTEROUS decision giving him the job. AL Gore had the majority of the votes! If any of you "thoughtful and smart" people out there think that anyone could FIX major economic problem's such as these in less than two years just don't have the ability to think things thru or look at THE FACTS! Many columns back I gave MY 4-step plan to get things going and it's so funny because several of them are coming to fruition. Oh, I forgot..this is about Glenn Beck. He's a snake oil salesman.

James, Connor: here's a question for you, from one of your fellow Republicans, Chuck Hagel:
"I don't see them presenting any alternatives, any new options or any new thinking," Hagel said. "If the Republicans get back in power, what are they going to do? There is no articulation. It's just a 'no no no, I'm against Obama because he's a socialist and he's taking America in the wrong direction.' That's certainly an opinion, but what about you, Mr. Republican? What would you do?"
http://www.washdiplomat.com/September%202010/a1_09_10b.html
dustyrhoades 1 year, 5 months ago
Conservative blogger Daniel Larison suggests one scenario:
"After all, even if the Republicans won the House there would not be much that they could do once in office, except waste their time as they did in the ’90s hauling executive branch officials before committees to testify on this or that outrage of the week. They would likely be stymied by the Democratic majority in the Senate on any major legislation, and Obama would veto just about anything they passed if it somehow got to his desk. At the same time, Obama would make them into a much more effective foil for his arguments once they had some hold on power, and out of frustration they would become increasingly obsessed with “getting” Obama and become even less interested in representing the interests of their constituents."

Moonchild7, I admire your chutzpa. Your views and my Republican ones are very different. I got the impression when Bush was elected that Democrats hated everything about him simply because he wasn't the man they voted for and "stole" the election. Democrats probably believe we Republicans are feeling the same way about Obama because our man didn't win. Neither of us believe that perception is fair about us.
We'll never have the same views but I agree with you that the Bush years certainly weren't perfect - we differ in who and what we blame for that.
My angst now, that is shared by a large number of Americans, is that there is $3-4 trillion -- enough for a huge stimulus -- being horded by business that is scared about ramifications of the passed healthcare and financial regulation bills, the possible expiration of the Bush tax cuts as they effect businesses not the middle class, the ascendancy of failed American unions, and the spector of cap and trade. You have totally different views I'm sure.
A key to coming up with a plan in my opinion will be to use wisdom that combines a respect for the lessons learned of history and real-life business/economic experience. It will have to be different in many ways from both Democratic and Republican strategies used in the past, but there is no wisdom in trying socialist routes.
nothingspecial 1 year, 5 months ago
Dusty, I read plenty of very good Republican suggestions in the news media I frequent. I think the news media you frequent do not publicize those suggestions.
davidwwalters 1 year, 5 months ago
nothingspecial says: ".....I got the impression when Bush was elected that Democrats hated everything about him simply because he wasn't the man they voted for and "stole" the election....."
-In spite of that fact, congressional dems DID work with Bush for the most part. They allowed him to lead as is his constitutional right. The republican opposition in the present congress has done their best to see the country fail so they can something to run on, since they have few ideas other than tax cuts for the wealthiest fraction of the population. Actually, it may work out well for them.....but not for the average American.
dustyrhoades 1 year, 5 months ago
As suspected, James has no answer, other than to attack the questioner. And nothingspecial can't name anything off the top of his/her head either.
nothingspecial 1 year, 5 months ago
DavidWW and Dusty, I see more attacks about the other side being bad too. But I see no substance from you two on why your party's path is the right way to continue other than that Republicans are evil, "no no's", or some such.
For instance, If you would try to see the other point of view you might notice that the Republicans couldn't vote for something like that rushed healthcare bill that was so faulty and ignored all Republican suggestions, and the similarily rushed financial regulation bill just on the principal of being bi-partisan. They were thousands of pages long and brought to a vote before even the Democrats could read them. You can't call us bad for not voting with you when you load the decks like that and come from such a far left stance. Bill Clinton and George W at least tried to meet folks halfway from a more moderate stance.
moonchild7 1 year, 5 months ago
The Republicans were total YES MEN for any and everything George conjured up in his empty puppet head(a lot of Democrats too). Those same Republicans have been totally contemptible since President Obama was elected. There is no way around any of that and with the media bias of FOX NEWS and their contingent of bobble heads like Glenn Beck another round of "vote the bums out" is upon us. President Obama just made the comment at a rally today that "they talk about me like I was a DOG." The REAL DOGS are those Republicans whose only concern is that they get re-elected so they can get back to funneling as much of our TREASURY to the wealthy as possible. These next two years will be even more horrendous than those years Republicans tried to get Clinton Impeached and out if they win in November.
I'm prepared for the worst and started my "Fortress" when Nixon was President. I saw the writing on the wall back in the '60's. If President Obama's supporters now jump ship to the "other side" then the "MAD MEN" of political advertising have again done their jobs very well. And a lot of Americans just don't seem to be able to see thru all of it. Very sad indeed.
dustyrhoades 1 year, 5 months ago
James: by "the questioner" that you were attacking I meant Hagel, who, had you bothered to actually comprehend, was asking the question: "If the Republicans get back in power, what are they going to do?"
And your answer proves Hagel correct when he said: "It's just a 'no no no, I'm against Obama because he's a socialist and he's taking America in the wrong direction.'
And even the wingnuttiest wingnut isn't predicting a veto-proof majority.
So you and nothingspecial have, through your non replies to the question "What will your party do if elected?" proven you have no ideas, no legislative strategy, and nothing to run on except "no no no Obama!" You'll win some seats with that. You may even get a majority in the legislature...but all you'll get with that strategy is gridlock.

Dusty, I'm inclined to think the reason you keep repeating these senseless cut down tactics of your's is that you're not talking to Republicans. You're pulling all the stops out in the only way you can to try to get your choir and hopefully one or two independents to focus on baseless prejudice against Republicans in the vain hope they'll forget you have no reply to "what's gone wrong the past two years? or, how do we get out of this mess?"
Moonchild7, you are entertaining.

NS, you're still ducking the question:
"If the Republicans get back in power, what are they going to do? other than go 'no no no, I'm against Obama because he's a socialist and he's taking America in the wrong direction."
Instead you've chosen to go into the standard whine about how I'm being so MEAN to the poor Republicans.
That answers the question nicely, though. If Republicans are elected, what they're going to do is more of the same: "no no no" mixed with "gripe gripe gripe, whine whine whine".

Great ideas James:
"build the fence"
"At a cost of $49 billion over the expected 25-year life span of the fence" And that doesn't include maintenance etc. Now that should bring the deficit down. Wouldn't it be much easier as you suggest to go after the ones employing the illegal aliens?
"no earmarks or pork-barrel spending". I can't imagine either party ever agreeing on this - so dream on."
"kick the terrorists' butts"
Yes - just as bush and the republican congress did with such great success. Almost a trillion dollar war that certainly kicked their butts alright! Of course Iraq is now a democracy........snicker!
"repeal Obamacare"
"According to the CBO projections, this bill will cover 32 million of this nation’s 47 million uninsured; bringing the national total to nearly 95 percent coverage. It will reduce the deficit by roughly $138 billion over the first ten years, and by $1.2 trillion over twenty years. "
Now I am certain you have health care and can afford it. many are not as fortunate as you Mr. James. The ones who can't afford it are treated anyhow and we ALL pay for them NOW.
"institute the Fair-Tax or a flat tax"
I actually agree with you on this one.
Well - to be honest - I have to say at least you have some proposals - unlike most of the republicans in congress.

Dusty, I see I should expect venom from your corner to ideas that oppose the current administration, with more and more occasionally some really good opposing views.
Anyone can go to the "Ten Transformational Issues" at this website http://www.heritage.org/ for just one of many versions of Conservative ideas for helping our country turn around issues we've been struggling with especially since the Summer of 2008.

"Let me help Mr. Rhoades in his response to what the Republicans will do when they take Congress."
You know, James, this thing you do, where you take both sides of a conversation with an imaginary me, is more than a little deranged.

Beck is a loon and a fraud. His Goldline scheme scams people into buying overpriced gold.

In 1968 when the unemployment rate was just 3.7% Robert F. Kennedy said this:
"Too much and too long, we seem to have surrendered community excellence and community values in the mere accumulation of material things. Our gross national product... if we should judge America by that -- counts air pollution and cigarette advertising, and ambulances to clear our highways of carnage. It counts special locks for our doors and the jails for those who break them. It counts the destruction of our redwoods and the loss of our natural wonder in chaotic sprawl. It counts napalm and the cost of a nuclear warhead, and armored cars for police who fight riots in our streets. It counts Whitman's rifle and Speck's knife, and the television programs which glorify violence in order to sell toys to our children.
Yet the gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education, or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages; the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials. It measures neither our wit nor our courage; neither our wisdom nor our learning; neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country; it measures everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile. And it tells us everything about America except why we are proud that we are Americans."
The Lobbyists in D.C. are running our country(into the ground). The Republican Party has become a bunch of maniacs. The Democrats seem to have lost their voice and nerve. The American People were HAD.
1 in 5 Americans are unemployed/underemployed. 1 in 9 cannot make their credit card payments. 1 in 8 mortgage's are in default. 1 in 8 Americans receive Food Stamps.
In order for things to get better, a whole lot of people need to wake up, toughen up(stop buying everything the tv trys to sell them), get educated for a better job, and start to get active in the Government/Politics. Demand better representation by voting and or protesting. We must have a living wage, great jobs, higher taxes for the wealthy(that is the one spot we need to go back in time to because THEY are NOT investing in our country), health care for all and better teachers.
America now has it's most socially liberal generation in it's history. So it's time to make the most forward and radical changes to keep us from falling further behind. We must NOT listen to backward thinking FOX NEWS or super conservative Republicans.

This is a bit off topic, but you have to admit, these signs just make you "Prowd to be an American!" ;)

Yes, Connor1, I can see clearly NOW....MELLOW MUSHROOMS, BLOND LEBANESE HASH, ANGEL DUST and oooooh, ooooooooh, I'm having a flash back.....NO, A FLASH FORWARD!!!!! The MINORITIES are COMING, The MINORITIES are COMING....and those tea bag elephants can't do anything about it. Nice knowin' ya and good riddance. Maybe not in 2010 but in 2012 there will be 16 million more Millenials(they helped to vote President Obama into office)and in 2016 there will be 32 million more!
They say to never look back but you righties might need to re-read some of the history of the Republican Party to try to find the few good things you used to represent(Start at the beginning guys with Lincoln).
THE FUTURE IS UPON US. DARKNESS BEFORE LIGHT. PEACE MAN.

No, Mr. Rhoades hasn't asked me to write anything. I don't know him, I've never met him, and I'm sorry MR. Rhoades, but I've read very few of your articles. What's so familiar? Most of what I write just comes "Naturally" out of my overworked curious brain. I do try to research and quote as much as possible although Prometheus has called me a liar. I TRY to see the best of everything and also TRY to have a sense of humor. Laughter can go a long way and it especially helps a lot being a "YANKEE" in the South. I received a wonderful complement many years ago by several NATVES here in Moore Co. when they told me, "YOU'RE really alright for a YANKEE."
