A resolution declaring “intent not to house federal prisoners in the new detention center” is on the agenda for adoption Monday by the Moore County Board of Commis-sioners.
Board Chairman Tim Lea polled board members at a September meeting, and all five commissioners expressed no interest in housing federal inmates once the new facility is occupied.
At an October meeting, Commissioner Nick Picerno repeated that consensus, and the board asked the county attorney, Misty Leland, to draw up a resolution covering the board’s wishes.
The resolution drafted by Leland says that the commissioners “intend, to the extent permitted by law, not to house federal inmates in the new detention center unless required by federal, state or local law.”
The commissioners will convene at 5 p.m. Monday in the historic courthouse in Carthage. The board will meet an hour earlier for a session closed to the public.
The commissioners have changed their regular meeting days from Monday to Tuesday but scheduled the first November meeting on Monday to avoid a conflict with the general election.
ETHICS — Also on the Monday agenda is adoption of a proposed code of ethics.
The commissioners underwent a training session on the proposed ethics code with the county attorney several weeks ago and discussed the code at the Oct. 19 meeting, when they agreed to table action until the next meeting.
In other business, the commissioners will conduct a public hearing to consider amendments to the road name and address ordinance and will be asked to take action on a public transportation grant from the N.C. Department of Transportation.
COBLE — Lindsay Morris, a member of Congressman Howard Coble’s Greensboro staff, will be in Southern Pines Wednesday to handle constituent inquiries and provide other services to Moore Countians.
Morris will be stationed at the Southern Pines Police Department on West Pennsylvania Avenue from 10 a.m. until 12 noon and from 1 until 3 p.m.
The schedule calls for the local office of the 6th Congressional District to be staffed on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. Her next visit will be on Wednesday, Nov. 17.
PARTIES — Victory parties planned by Moore County Republicans will begin at 7:30 Tuesday night, when the polls are closed.
One party hosted by the county GOP will be held at Table on the Green at Midland Country Club on Midland Road. County Commissioner Jimmy Melton will host the other party at his business, the Harley-Davidson dealership on U.S. 15-501 near Eastwood.
