The Union Pines Lady Vikings parlayed their undefeated regular season conference championship into more tennis titles Thursday at the Cape Fear Valley Conference Tournament in Sanford.

In singles action, sophomore Melissa Tally took home the crown for Union Pines. It is her second CFVC tournament championship. Last year, as a freshman, Tally teamed with Madi Kramer to take the doubles title.

"I am feeling really good about this win," said Tally. "It is an honor to be conference champion."

Tally jumped out to a quick start in the championship match. Behind a strong opening service game, she then broke Westover's Samantha Ledbetter serve to lead 2-0. But Ledbetter then rallied to claim the next four games taking a 4-2 lead to go up a break.

"She started to get everything in," Tally said of her opponent, "and that got me down a bit. So I told myself to focus, play my own game and just make shots and move her around."

After holding serve in the pivotal seventh game, Tally hit her stride. She strung together four consecutive service breaks on her way to winning the final seven games and collecting a 10-4 victory.

Meanwhile, the Lady Vike sophomore tandem of Kramer and Laura Cameron captured the doubles championship with a 10-6 win in the title match.

It was Kramer's second CFVC doubles tournament title in as many years.

"Having not played at all together in doubles play this season, I feel like Laura and I worked really well as a team," she said. "Laura is a great partner to play with. She has an awesome serve and gets just about everything back from the baseline."

Last season, Cameron teamed with current Union Pines junior Brittany Jones as the CFVC doubles' runner-up team.

"This feels amazing," said Cameron. "My serve was going really good today. I had a lot of aces out there which is always a plus.

"I was very disappointed we didn't win last year - but we lost to our teammates, so that made it fine. Now actually winning the championship is just a great feeling."

Overall, Union Pines had eight players qualify for next week's Mid-East Regional tournament. The Viking doubles' team of Virginia Priest and Shannon Simpson were runners-up for Union Pines. Jones and the duo of Elena D'Argenio-Maddie Walden were semifinalists for Union Pines.

The Mid-East Regional will be held at the Burlington Tennis Center, this Friday and Saturday with play beginning at 2 p.m.

Union Pines hosts Chapel Hill in the opening round of the dual team state playoffs, Tuesday at 4 p.m.
