Sixth of a Series

This is the sixth of a series in which Moore County’s Republican and Democratic party chairmen will address various political issues. Today's issue is the upcoming election. Jim Heim is chairman of the Moore County Democratic Party. Robert M. Levy is chairman of the Moore County Republican Party. Click here for Heim's take on the issue.

My friends tell me, "I vote for the person, not the party!"

And I understand that sentiment. Clearly, I could not vote for David Duke, the Klan leader turned politician, no matter which party carried his registration. Nor would most Democrats vote for Obama supporter and semi-reformed terrorist Bill Ayers, should he seek public office.

But, absent the emergence of a morally unacceptable nominee, it makes sense to vote for the standard bearer of the party which advocates an image of what America should be.

For me, that means a conservative country that supports government limited to the protection of liberty and the pursuit of happiness while always protecting life at every stage of its being.

It means a proud country, unapologetic about its use of its military when would-be invaders, whether they be Muslim fanatics or illegal aliens, cross our borders with a desire to change our way of life.

It also means a country where taxes are collected and utilized sparingly with the primary purpose of enhancing an atmosphere in which private enterprise can bring new jobs to the unemployed. My image of America is a country which encourages the taking of risk by allowing the brave to keep the monetary reward which is the by-product of hard work.

There are really only two parties in this country. Some people may want three or maybe more. But the government will be controlled by either Republicans or Democrats. The party that wins the majority will control not only which laws are passed, but also the laws on which the lawmakers can vote and which ones are so deeply buried in committee that it will take a miracle to resurrect even their shadow.

Democrats will enact laws that make energy more expensive, hoping that the middle class will drive less and the poor will use the bus or a bicycle. Democrats will force on us new health care regulations that confirm to the government the power to ration care among the "masses" on a model decided in Washington.

They have faith in government to become a "great leveler" and enforcer of "social justice." For Democrats, "It Takes a Village to Raise a Child." For me, the village needs to stick to building sewers, reservoirs and "roundabouts." I want my wife and me to have the final say about our children. I also want to keep my earnings to spend on my children and grandchildren as we, not Pelosi, see fit.

Now, even though I am chair of the Republican Party, I may not agree with everything my party leaders do. When George Bush and John McCain wanted amnesty for illegals, I was as opposed as if the proposal had come from Harry Reid.

But, I know that, overall, my image of America and that of the Republican Party are so close that I must vote Republican because it is the party that both respects and encourages my conservative views. It is the only place where my ideal America has a chance to become an American reality.

If Republicans make errors, and they will, they will err on the side of the right to bear arms. Democrats will err on the side of firearm confiscation. Republicans may trim welfare a bit too much for some, but Democrats will err by making welfare so pervasive that personal initiative will be destroyed.

In the end, Democrats will be loyal or at least sympathetic to the policies of bigger government, higher taxes and social justice through redistribution of wealth. Republicans will be loyal or at least sympathetic to lower taxes, smaller government and a society where God remains a present in the "public square."

I vote Republican because it is the party that promotes the individual and fights the collective. I respect those that consider themselves independent. But once in the voting booth, we all must all ask ourselves quietly, "Which side are you on?"

It seems that with every economic calamity, there is a cry to impose Robin Hood economics to equalize wealth. Roosevelt's NRA and other policies just prolonged the Great Depression. Obama's "stimulus" and unemployment compensation extensions have likely done the same, all with borrowed money.

Only tax cuts, as passed by Kennedy, Reagan and Bush, advocated by today's Republicans and opposed by today's Democrats, have brought America quickly out of economic morass. And that deliverance from economic poverty to prosperity is what we will vote on this fall.

For me, the choice is simple: Democrats trying to establish Obama's "Metropolis of Enforced Social Justice" or Republicans trying to renew the promise of Reagan's "Shining City on a Hill." I choose the bright sunlight for my children and grandchildren to inherit.

For all the stakes are high. But especially for them, I will vote Republican.

"Obama's "stimulus" and unemployment compensation extensions have likely done the same, all with borrowed money" .

Yep right here in good old North Carolina and Moore County... http://www.ncrecovery.gov/library/pdf/Guidebook/Introduction-100countySpreadsheet.pdf

As long as we benefit from those Obama Stimulus Dollars like the money for water infrastructure around Lake Pinehurst, a new water tank, new sewer lines, etc. And over 4 million for our schools, we are just getting our money back so to speak.

A good suggestion Mr. Levy ~ protest at on the steps of the State Capitol Building and ask to send the money back to Washington.

"unemployment compensation extensions" perhaps you have never been layed off from a job that was shipped overseas, or endorsed the Free Trade Agreement or given tax breaks to companies who move off-shore. Maybe you could care less if a child has a meal, roof over their head, or medical care? You are a hypocrite. Plan and simple.

Not everyone in our society was born into prestigious families, provided equal opportunities to education, and employment. Can afford out of control health care costs, where parents or their children can receive basic medical care. You obviously don't live in reality...Richard Burr receives thousands of dollars from Pharmicutical Company Lobbyists. Do you think they represent those who can't afford medication? NO!

Do you think the homeless veterns who served our county should starve and not have care? In California alone there are 9000 homeless veterns.

Your one-sided vision of America alludes to your prominance as an attorney, but go live on the street for a week and then stand on your soapbox! You probably support Wall Street Hedgefund investments as well, since it is always someone elses money.

82soldier & Psychodad1972=> His [Levy's] concept of a perfect America...and perfect society....

Can you name a few other countries that are not totalitarian or ruled by dictators who view his conceptualization of what America should be and stand for in a democracy?

Only one ruler comes to mind who thought all German people should have blond hair and blue eyes. One topic board for discussion objects to social care of American Citizens. The one we're on now.

I’m sure Mr. Levy would like to keep all of his earnings and not contribute to the whole of society; that is the mantra of the conservative Republican Party ~ why should we pay for those who are a burden on society, we worked for ours. They need to work for theirs.

Not everyone in our society was born with intellect, prestige, wealth, a positive family socio-economic structure, or never had to go without a meal at school or at home. Didn't need health care for a loved one. Good for them! Like it or not, we are our brothers keepers! Unless one is an atheist or a Nazi or Conservative Republican!

It's all about social injustice and white privilege is what Mr. Levy is referring to in his prejudicial article and using his white privilege to qualify his De Jure Segregation system of inequalities; also known as Jim Crow - a system that was sanctioned and reinforced by the legal code of segregation. His diatribe reeks of social injustice and exploitation of the unemployed and salt-of-the earth American Citizens.

Perhaps if he and many others would expand their social intellect, a DVD by Tim Wise qualifies my contention about social class and white privilege. Here's a brief clip from one of his many speaking engagements around the nation at higher learning institutions:

Another good read is Joseph F. Healey, Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Class: The Sociology of Group Conflict and Change.

Perhaps we should move out from in front of the TV and read a book on occasion; we may have the ability to focus on poorly written articles like Mr. Levy's and respond in kind.

"Heavens forbid there be an establishment of social justice. Nice job of pandering to those who fear the ones who are in need of assistance during these economic times." Fear of people who need help? Really? Can you explain this too please?

0

Satch2929 1 year, 7 months ago

Great article! Well said!

0

None 1 year, 7 months ago

BradMcneill=> where's the comparison? His words - not mine. "It is the only place where my ideal America has a chance to become an American reality. Hitler had simular idea's for his idea for Germany prior to WWII. I know Levy is a Jewish name. I'm not comparing Levy with Hitler - just his idea's of what America should be according to an Ultra Conservative Republican.

Social class warfare: "Republicans may trim welfare a bit too much for some, but Democrats will err by making welfare so pervasive that personal initiative will be destroyed."

That has got to be the most irrespondsible remark The Pilot has ever produced in print! Mr. Levy is disgusting.

0

None 1 year, 7 months ago

MooreNorth => What Levy is referring to is called the Noel Hypothesis which states: if tow or more groups come together in a contact situation characteriized by ethnocentrism, competition and a diffenetial in power, then some form of racial or ethnic stratification will result.

If the contact situation has all three characteristics, some dominant-minority group structure will be created. There are three in his model for the establishment of a "Minority Group Status"; 1. Ethnocentrism => group boundies established (who to dominate) 2. Competion => Motivation to establish superiority ( to dominate) 3. Differential of Power => Dominant groups imposes its will on minority group (how to dominate).

Before Mr. Levy submits his Ethnocentrism belief's for print, he should take a course in Social Inequalities, and The Pilot would be well served to edit his condescending remarks toward those less fortunite in our county.

82soldier, If you were military you have seen the social class seperation in this country. Individuals are the ones that make the choise as to the way they survive in this country, not government. The systems be mucked up for decades, but individuals make the choise to take handouts or to lack initiative. To many people forget about being a humanitarian first. We all have to live together and i would like to see everyone doing better financialy but "some choose" to only be takers. we cant do away with the help just to punnish a few.

I beleive that some people have had their morals tainted by money. Me,Me,Me,and the Heck with everyone else. GREED, its mine and im not sharing. This is an evil and destructive thing to do to our great society.

0

None 1 year, 7 months ago

82soldier=> Are you talking about "Hoovervilles"? Or are you referring to Hedgefund Investors who crashed Wall Street with toxic paper. Or are you referring to Burney Madoff? He and Levy have the same mentality...rob from the weak and poor...disrupt families from low to moderate incomes, reposes homes, starve the homeless.

Most retired military Officers who walk out to their mailbox and receive their government checks every month and have health care provided by taxpayers for them and their families have an Ultra Conservative view of discrimination for the middle and lower classes.

Are you retired and getting your check and benefits on a regular basis? Then good for you...taxpayers owe you every dime....the rest can starve and go without health care....

BYTW: What makes you think I'm need medication when I am adamantly opposed to any social injustice. I don't live in a fantasy world; I live in the real world!

0

blake 1 year, 7 months ago

Toda, you have gone off the deep end. You are going to equate Mr Levy to Madoff? How is Mr Levy stealing? Who is proposing starving the homeless?

0

None 1 year, 7 months ago

blake=> "He and Levy have the same mentality...rob from the weak and poor...disrupt families from low to moderate incomes, reposes homes, starve the homeless."

Mr. Levy's "ideal America" conjures up an attitude of elitism. They have the same mentality. Mr. Levy should keep his money for his family so that they may prosper - and rightly so. But that's not what happens in a democractic society. We are in fact our brothers keepers. There are countries like Denmark where citizens pay 50-60 percent of their salary for quality education for all citizens; and provide health care for all citizens. Not in this country. To many wealthy Americans earn their dividends from mismanaged stock market investments. Elitism at it's best!

Should one day in America everyone who wants a quality education is given that opportunity, then eveyone can contribute.

0

KarenH 1 year, 7 months ago

82soldier and mauiman-Bravo-I couldn't agree more!

0

None 1 year, 7 months ago

mauiman => did you receive pay for your service every month. Did you and your family receive quality health care, medical and dental, and reduced cost for food at the post exchange?

Did you make a conscience decision to enter the military? Or do you come from a long line of career military people?

"Do not generalize my thoughts or beliefs with your misguided outrage." Not outrage ~ anger that there are still people in this country who consider themselves better than someone else in 2010.

"You do not have a clue?" and what makes you think that I don't have a clue. Should I care that you served in places not on a map - not really. You made that decision. Somewhere you were obviously given an opportunity to make career choices and had political support. Is every service member a West Point Graduate? I think not - only those families who have a private number for their Congressman and write large contributions experience those privileges’ of life. The rest serve their country to come home and live on the streets or in homeless shelters. Did you not see 60 minutes Sunday night?

Do you think for one moment that the senior working a cash register at Wal Mart chose that as their profession or the person working at a fast food restaurant wanted that career path. Hell no!

General ~ thank you for your service, personally, I don't think you are worth 6K a month to chase golf balls all day.

Last Sunday at church, I made the comment about "John the Devine" aka John the Baptist, coming out of the wilderness clothed in animal skins, unshaven for months, probably smelly from not taking a bath, and wondered how many in our churchs' congregation would offer him a plate of food, a warm bath, and a clean bed to sleep on? Or cross the street to walk past him to avoid him because of his appearance?

I sorely understand where you are coming from!

"This country was built by people showing initiative, standing on their own two feet and striving to succeed." In fact, this country was taken over (from a people who already lived here) by people who thought that the 'white man's way' of life was the best way. Complete disregard for people who had survived generations before. How very noble of them. The Native American was murdered, humiliated, and relegated to 'reservation' living to accommodate the 'hard working white man's way of life. Notwithstanding that through the years, suppression of anyone who looked different was the norm, requiring people to fight for themselves. The irony of Lincoln's address is that the new nation he refers to as conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal, was in fact accomplished by near annihilation of the Native American, enslavement of Africans brought over for just that purpose. Get real folks. The trend of today's atmosphere, no matter the complex twists, is that Republicanism is the face of the new 'racism' in America that is as old as America. Just my opinion and until proven different, I will stand on it. Any thing or one who challenges their right to be "in charge" they abhor. And Blacks in America need to take the blinders off. My family fights for this country (by choice) and has done so since World War I and even now in Iraq and Afghanistan. In any other country, a person who dared call its country's leader a "LIE" interrupting a nationally televised presentation would have faced severe consequenses. And he did it because he was livid that a 'black man in America was in charge'. History has proven that white men in America can take just about anything, except a taking direction from a black man. Wow! We really haven't come very far. Notice all the corrupt Corporate leaders...Majority Republican white men who were stealing their companies blind. Remember Haliburton anyone? Republicanism at its best.

An enlighting perspective on race here in America and the dogma associated with our beliefs. Purchase the DVD and if you don't come away with a totally different perspective, I'll buy it from you. The library at UNC Pembroke has a copy that can be check out if you know someone there.

mauiman => well good for you, Sir! I call it like I see it. My father was a WWII veteran who was awarded the Soldiers’ Metal of Honor for his heroism, along with three purple hearts and numerous ribbons, and unit citations and distinctions. I don't know you and you don't know me or anything about my life as well. Just leave it at that!

" Rather you just rant on and on about the military, belittling those who served for earned benefits." You Sir make things up...why are so many veterans not receiving the medical and emotional care they deserve through the VA? Why are so many Vets living on the streets and in homeless shelters? And those General's are receiving thousands a month in benefits - direct deposit. Have you seen the Pentagons' Budget? No wonder this country is broke!

I chose not to go to Viet Nam after high-school friends began coming home for their own funerals. Never did understand that war - or conflict is how Johnson framed it. Now we are friends with the communist nation after 68,000 American soldiers lost their lives and an untold number from the effects of Agent Orange and PTSS. Many of whom are still living on the streets!

“, belittling those who served for earned benefits” I think that is a ludicrous statement. Only chastising the arrogant fat cats who think this county owes them something because of their political affiliation.

My brother-in-law served in Viet Nam and retired with full benefits; he worked for civil service and retired from that cushy job, in addition, he gets his social security, Medicare, military health coverage, and still has base privileges’. He is only one of hundreds of thousand receiving money from the federal government; the Conservative Republicans want to cut spending for those who didn't have the same opportunities because of health reasons, socio-economic stagnation, educational opportunities, equal pay for male and females, and I could go on and on. Perhaps you might invest some of your time studying Social Injustice and Social Inequalities. Then perhaps, you just might understand where I'm coming from.

When's the last time you walked the hall of a college or university? Talked with other students regarding their difficulties enrolling? Perhaps with your Military Benefits, you should have no problem with continuing your education. It goes without saying, what a freshman learns in their first year of college, will change completely by their senior year. In some cases in one semester....

If you can convince me that the post in question was not replete with rascist overtones, I will happily purchase the suggested DVD set.

0

82soldier=> with all due respect, you may want to take my offer I made to Behan...I had an opportunity to see Tim Wises' presentation in it's entirity. You will come away with a totally different perspective ~ I can and will assure you of that. Watch his complete presentation, and if you don't come away a changed person, I will pay you for the DVD!

0

None 1 year, 7 months ago

Behan=> yes! Perhaps they should view the DVD as well. It's only one DVD and not a set. I stand by my comment that if you don't come away with a totally different prespective, I will pay your costs.

I would hope that a local group would sponser Tim's presentation at the Sunrise. He is on the speaking circuit and his presentation has become a must see for many sociology classes. The YouTube clip is very brief. His presentation is about an hour or a bit longer. But well worth ones' time.

0

Behan 1 year, 7 months ago

Toda:

I put Mr. Wise's name into my Google machine and most of the links describe him as a prominent "anti-rascist writer."

I must ask, if Mr. Wise is an anti-rascist writer, why do you not suggest that mythreekids should watch his DVD?

It was mythreekids, after all, who just took us all on an adventure through the mind of a rascist. I simply pointed it out.

Have we reached that stage in liberal-run society where simply identifying racism now makes you a rascist?

0

None 1 year, 7 months ago

Behan=> I said "yes" to your question. I just finished watching the YouTube Clip...very brief. But he hits at the heart of racism in today's world. I watched the video with others in my class who by the way were all female ladies of color. Everyone including myself who was the only white male in the class left with new and better insight and understanding into racism in today's society as well as elitism.

I think the DVD is something everyone should see and have an opportunity to form their own opinions.

Please let me know what you think of Tim's presentation....

Call me what you will. We are moving backwards instead of going forward. My kids are taught to think for themselves, regard all people with respect and to do what is right. That includes teaching them their history, how to be productive individuals and how to listen to and value others who differ from them. America, in my opinion, is a great nation. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the world. We are not perfect, there is no one political party that has all the answers. It is time we started looking at the individuals who run for various offices instead of their last name. I still maintain that the President of the United States, as any other, can only accomplish what those who must 'vote' for his/her agenda support. This current congress has voted primarily partisan. And, that, folks has the been the greatest injustice for the American people. In my opinion, racism in America is still alive and well. To deny that is to deny myself the privilege of helping make the America I live in a better place for my children to thrive. I respect every person's right to believe what they choose. I never said white people are evil, nor do I believe they are all evil. No intelligent person would make that assumption. There is good in all of us and, yes there is bad in all of us. What is more important is that we acknowledge that and make every effort to work together to enhance the good, change the bad where we can. That is what I want my children to do. Be the best they can be, acknowledging that if their circumstances are better than someone else's, then they have an obligation to try to help that someone get to a better circumstance.

0

None 1 year, 7 months ago

mauiman=> "the Conservative Republicans want to cut spending for those..." I'm certain you've read Mr. Levy's article?

Above military service? As opposed to being below military service? I didn't support a mindless war on the other side of the world and America attempting to bomb human beings back to the Stone Age from 30,000 feet - defenseless women and children. Lt. Callie didn’t represent all soldiers or veterans, but left a lasting memory for many who opposed that war.

I recall many years ago a college professor once said, “that the pen is mightier than the sword”. I voice my opinions much to the chagrin of other writers, not everyone agrees with my “in your face” dialogue. When one is confrontational ~ like minded people express their opinions and views in a similar manner. We can agree to disagree ~ that's what the Public Political Option is all about. Also, least we not forget Political Tolerance.

I’m not sure what you taught in college or if you are currently teaching, hopefully it’s not a lopsided perspective of sociology and race in America.

"Republicans may trim welfare a bit too much for some, but Democrats will err by making welfare so pervasive that personal initiative will be destroyed." Socio-economic...wealthy individuals can afford health care while others cannot.

"It also means a country where taxes are collected and utilized sparingly with the primary purpose of enhancing an atmosphere in which private enterprise can bring new jobs to the unemployed." Private enterprise is strapped by high taxes, as well as jobs sent offshore through Free Trade Agreements.

"higher taxes and social justice through redistribution of wealth."

Should we get into definitions of Liberals vs. Conservatives? Your smarter than that I suspect.

"So those who served during Vietnam supported the war and the bombing of women and children." Not all or a fraction for that matter - just LBJ sitting in his office in the White House, and his joint chiefs of staff who believed in the "scorched earth theroy" of total distruction...Perhaps you can justify the use of Napalm on entire villages ~ remember the AP Wire photo of the nude little girl running from her village with burns over most of her body? How many American's did the Vietnamese murder or injure here in the US of A? But our military mobilizes and crosses the globe in an attempt to distroy their country and way of life! To say nothing about the loss of life that ensued.

Should I have remorse for not serving in the military. I think not. Do I support mass murder of women and children for any reason...I do not! We don't share simuliar political views or views about our military engagements. Those who served in WWII fought for a reason - we were attacked December 7th 1942. Just after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, over 160,000 Japanese Americans were up-rooted and sent to armed camps on the West Coast. It looks like in the near future anyone who confesses to be a muslum may experience the same violation of their civil rights.

We can agree to disagree....Thank you for your service to our county.

0

KarenH 1 year, 7 months ago

Toda-I don't feel the need to defend my opinion to you. The fact that I have one that is different from yours is something that I am proud to share. I notice that you are not beyond name calling when others are not in awe of your selfless brilliance. You know nothing of me and my life experiences. Perhaps I have been one of the "weak and homeless" that you are so concerned about. Perhaps that is why I can know that the only way to have self respect is to pull yourself out of poverty by hard work and self improvement. I believe that there is a big difference in a hand out and a hand up. I also believe, if you have not walked a mile in someones shoes, that armchair philosophy is worthless. "Plantation mentality"? Well ,fiddle-dee-dee!

0

None 1 year, 7 months ago

blake=> Nine minutes of an hour and a-half academic presentation doesn't represent his theory. You're interjecting thought that isn't actually represented in his speaking engagements.

No where is either referred to or mentioned!

0

None 1 year, 7 months ago

mauiman=> Sorry about the date December 7th 1941 - keyboard slip....

"You seem to believe that the problems must be someone else's fault and thus let's give people what they want without any social or civic obligation."

Not true...we all have the ability to chose our life's path and make decisions regarding our social stratification as long as the playing field is leveled.

0

None 1 year, 7 months ago

KarenH => and you don't have too. I wouldn't think otherwise.

"I notice that you are not beyond name calling when others..." please share - TPo3 is an acronym for The Power of Three representing block voting that has been reported in The Pilot as a 3-2 voting record. Now, could you be more specific?

"You know nothing of me and my life experiences" and where did I mention any thing about your life experiences? Or are you just venting?

"if you have not walked a mile in someone’s shoes, that armchair philosophy is worthless." my family lived with my grandmother on the "Cotton Mill Hill" for several months growing up. No indoor toilet, water was out back with a bucket and a dipper. Trash burners and wood stoves provided heat along with a dozen quilts during winter months. Walked to Vass-Lakeview to school every morning and home in the afternoons, not in the snow since there was no school. Third world living at its best...and you did what?

Plantation mentality is equated with indentured servants, like the American people are with the government. By the way, take time to study immigration and you might just realize that 200 years later, Mexicans are still indentured servants on many farm co-ops.

Sorry if I offend you...didn't mean to be condescending.
