East Montgomery beat North Moore 28-12 in Yadkin Valley Conference football action in Biscoe Friday.
All four touchdowns for the Eagles (6-2, 3-1 YVC) came in the first quarter. Chris Everett scored three rushing touchdowns of 31, 1 and 12 yards and quarterback Matthew Reynolds added another on the ground to open up a 28-0 lead.
Turnovers hurt North Moore (0-8, 0-4 YVC) in the first half. The Mustangs' best scoring opportunity came in the second quarter as they drove down into the East Montgomery redzone. But a fumble lost on an option pitch ended it prematurely.
But the Mustangs played better in the second half, scoring twice and holding East scoreless. Darius Greene had a 9-yard touchdown run and Sterling Barrett caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tyler Wallace.
"If we can take the first half of the last game (against North Rowan) and the second half of this game and put them together, we've got a pretty good game," coach Greg Simmons said. "We're not good enough to where we can make mistakes and win. They've (East) got some backs that can fly and we can't catch them unless we do what we're supposed to do perfectly.
"So we made some mistakes, I made some bad calls and they capitalized on them. After that, we were OK. We just had to regroup and we were fine. I'm proud of the kids. They're playing hard, and if you don't think we're getting better, you're crazy."
The offense seemed to find its rhythm in the second half. Tyler Wallace took most of the snaps at quarterback Friday, allowing Xavier Scotton to make big plays at tailback and at receiver.
"We just felt our best opportunity tonight was giving Xavier the ball in different spots," he said. "Xavier, on both sides of the ball, was awesome tonight. You take those two kids (Wallace and Scotton), and then Sterling Barrett making some big catches, T.J. Kennedy making some big catches. These are guys we knew had it them. Now if we can get them all firing at the same time, I think we're going to be a pretty tough team to beat."
Greene's touchdown run capped a 12-play, 68-yard drive in the third quarter. Barrett's came with 8:35 remaining the fourth quarter. Both two-point conversion attempts were unsuccessful.
North Moore's Mitchell Wright blocked an East Montgomery field goal in the second quarter, and the defense recovered two East Montgomery fumbles in the second half.
"We're going to get one," Simmons said. "We're going to put together a perfect game. It's just a matter of time."
Next up for the Mustangs is another conference foe, South Stanly (1-7, 1-3 YVC).
