Sonny Thomson, from Richmond, Va., will help the Yellow Rockers Square Dance Club celebrate fall with a barbecue dinner Saturday, Oct. 23.
"The Yellow Rockers invite the public to join them between 5 and 6:30 p.m. at the Old West End Gym in West End for Sonny's excellent dinner including chicken, pork barbecue, slaw, baked beans, roll, homemade dessert and a drink," says a spokesman.
Starting at 2 p.m., there will be an introduction to square dance and a workshop. Those who want to participate in the lesson and square dance workshop should arrive by 2 p.m.
Following dinner there will be a mainstream dance for anyone wishing to participate.
Vance McDaniel, from Raleigh, will be the instructor/caller for this event. Following in his father's footsteps, McDaniel started calling at the age of 13 in Germany, where he was a military dependent. While living in Germany, he called for many clubs and was a member of the European Callers and Teachers Association. When McDaniel returned to the U.S., he called for and helped establish many North Carolina square dance clubs. He has also been a guest caller at many Southeastern and Midwestern clubs in the U.S. He is currently club caller for two clubs. He does many weekend special events and parties and has been a member of Callerlab, an organization that standardizes square dance calls worldwide, for 25 years.
The whole day, including the meal, will cost $10. Those who don't want to dance can eat for $8. For planning purposes, call Margaret at (910) 949-9927 to make a reservation.
