U.P. Tennis Wins Big at Conference Tourney

The Union Pines Lady Vikings parlayed their undefeated regular season conference championship into more tennis titles at the Cape Fear Valley Conference tournament.
Sophomore Melissa Tally took home the singles crown for Union Pines Wednesday in Sanford. Vikings Madi Kramer and Laura Cameron captured the doubles championship.
Overall, Union Pines had eight players qualify for next week’s Mid-East Regional tournament. The doubles team of Virginia Priest and Shannon Simpson were runners-up, while Vikes Brittany Jones and the duo of Elena D’Argenio-Maddie Walden were semifinalist.
The Mid-East regional will be held at the Burlington Tennis Center, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 22 and 23, with play beginning at 2:00 p.m.
First, Union Pines hosts Chapel Hill in the opening round of the dual team state playoffs. The match is scheduled for Tuesday with play beginning at 4:00
Singles: Championship — Tally (UP) defeated Samantha Ledbetter (Westover) 10-4; Semifinals — Tally defeated Stephanie Hunter, (Western Harnett) 10-3; Ledbetter defeated Jones (UP) 10-4.
Doubles: Championship — Kramer/Cameron (UP) defeated Priest/Simpson (UP) 10-6; Semifinals —Kramer/Cameron defeated D’Argenio/Walden (UP) 10-4; Priest/Simpson defeated Taylor Barber-Jessica Lacey (Gray’s Creek) 10-8.
