Southern Pines police are investigating the death of a motorcyclist involved in an accident Friday afternoon.

The name of the victim was not released pending notification of next of kin.

The motorcycle struck the back of a car between 12:30 and 1 p.m. on Broad Street between Vermont and Maine avenues. The road was blocked off while police investigated.

There was minimal damage to either the car or the motorcycle. Unconfirmed preliminary reports indicated that the rider may have died of natural causes before the impact.

I don't mind an accident scene it's the poorly planned ones that I hate.

Wonder if the rider was wearing a helmet, and if it was a Harley instead of a crotchrocket.....

How very sad. Looked like a sport bike, not sure about the helmet, but it is the law. One of my very best friends died as the result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident and he was wearing a helmet. Not sure what a well planned accident scene looks like unless melzabeth you mean that they did not allow visibility of the victim. I always try to be especially considerate of those on two wheels sharing the highways with us. A somber reminder of what can happen in the blink of an eye.

NC Law requires a helmet. Regardless of the bike, car drivers need to be more aware of motorcycles on the roads. There are many more now, and especially more female drivers (don't know if this biker was male or female). Praying for the family. Very sad.

The motorcyclist possibly had a heart attack which caused him to rear end the car. He was dead prior to impact. God please comfort the families.

Hard to believe there's no update on this story after 24 hours.

intrepidreader....until they officially notify next of kin, there will be no update - especially not releasing name of victim or official cause of death (if they even know that for sure yet). Think about the victim's family - would you want to find out about a loved one dying by reading about it in the media??? I think not. My prayers go out to the family of the deceased and the the young man that was driving the car that was struck by the motorcycle. He did nothing wrong! Just in the wrong place at the wrong time. He needs our prayers too!

More details about how the accident happened would not require naming anyone. In any case, there is an update to the story plus a photo now, but as it happens, one of the comments had already revealed the same info the update does.

nanaof2, I'm so sorry your son found himself involved in this and I hope he's able to realize that it was nothing he could have kept from happening.

People can ask some dumb questions. Is it a Harley ? I would say no. all Harley's, I have seen have the two pipes one the right side. Was he wearing a helmet ? You can see that in the picture and would any of that change anything now. In having respect for the family of the bike rider as well as the driver that he hit in the rear, we could lift them and there families up in prayers. Just be thankful your here to read about it..
