North Carolina artist Richard Oversmith will conduct a two-day still life oil painting workshop at the Campbell House Galleries Saturday, Jan. 8, and Sunday, Jan. 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Oversmith and his photographer father, Rick, will be the featured artists at the Campbell House Galleries in January.

The workshop is designed for intermediate to advanced students to improve their still life oil painting skills. Richard will teach his tried-and-true Alla Prima method. Students will explore all aspects of still life paintings from setup to finish. Working on smaller canvases with large brushes will help students focus on the bigger shapes of a composition. Emphasis will be put on values, edges, color and simplifying a composition to create paintings that have unity. Oversmith will give daily demonstrations and individual instruction and critique.

Oversmith received formal training in fine art illustration at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Mich. While at Kendall, he was invited to study at the Royal College of Art in London, England. There he gained experience in plein air painting and found direction in his work as an oil painter.

Oversmith resides in western North Carolina where the natural beauty has proven to offer infinite inspiration for his impressionistic landscapes. He has painted all over the United States and spent six months living and painting in Brittany, France.

Oversmith is an active member of the Oil Painters of America and the Plein Air Painters of the Southeast. He is represented by galleries throughout North Carolina and Anderson Fine Art Gallery in St. Simons Island, Ga. He has participated in countless solo and group shows throughout the country and has been featured in the Art Collector Magazine. His work can be viewed at richardoversmith.com.

The cost of the workshop is $220, and a $110 deposit will be required at the time of registration. Students will be required to bring their own easels, and a list of other supplies will be provided prior to the workshop. The workshop will be held at the Campbell House Galleries, 482 East Connecticut Ave., Southern Pines.

Call the Arts Council at (910) 692-4356 to sign up. The workshop will be limited to a minimum of eight and maximum of 12 students.
