Four Local Hoops Players Begin College Seasons

Former Union Pines star Alishia Mosley leads a quartet of local college basketball players that know how to fill the stat sheet in a variety of ways.

Mosley, a freshman at North Carolina A & T, was named to the all-tournament team after making her college debut at Winthrop University last week. An all-state, all-region and all-conference performer at Union Pines, she scored more than 1,000 points in her Viking career.

Mosley scored nine points in 18 minutes of action off the bench as the Aggies were trounced 119-71 in the tournament opener by Central Michigan. In the starting lineup for the Aggies’ next game on Sunday, her performance was spectacular in an 81-56 win over Winthrop.

The 5-foot-8 guard was 5-for-10 from behind the arc while putting 22 points on the board. She also recorded five assists, five rebounds, three steals and committed only one turnover in 35 minutes of action.

The preseason men’s basketball preview that appeared on the Cornell University athletic website was quite prophetic when it described former Pinecrest star Adam Wire.

“No player in the Ivy League may be quite as unique as Wire. Built like a tight end, Wire can affect a game without scoring a point thanks to his high rebounding rate and his high motor on defense. He has unbelievably strong and quick hands, plays the passing lanes and can defend all five positions on the floor.”

The 6-5, 235 pound senior forward grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, handed out a career-high eight assists, scored two points and had a steal in the Big Red’s 65-61 season-opening victory at Albany University.

“Senior Adam Wire did what he always does — influence the game with his hustle and basketball IQ,” cornellbigred.com reported.

Wire averaged 13 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and three steals during his all-conference senior season at Pinecrest. He has played on three Ivy League championship teams in a row. Last year’s 29-5 Big Red squad lost to Kentucky in the Sweet 16. Coach Steve Donahue left at the end of the season to coach at Boston College. All but one starter from those teams graduated.

With returnee Chris Wroblewski injured, Wire’s two starts as a junior represented the only ones in the starting five new coach Bill Courtney put on the floor against Albany. After a loss to Seton Hall and a win on Wednesday over Delaware, the Big Red take a 2-1 record into tonight’s home game against St. Bonaventure.

O’Neal graduate Margaret Cross, and Troy Hadlock, who played at Union Pines and Grace Christian, are two more college basketball players that are going to keep the stat keepers busy.

Cross, a junior at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Ga., scored 13 points to go along with eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals in her team’s 100-94 season-opening loss at Sewanee (Tenn.) on Tuesday.

She was 3 for 8 from behind the arc after making 44 percent of her shots from that distance a year ago and leading the Scots with a total of 48 treys.

Hadlock is a co-captain and the only senior on the squad at Clearwater Christian College (Fla.), which is a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA).

In last Saturday’s game against Div. II, Peach Belt Conference opponent Flagler, the Cougar point guard scored a team-high 16 points that included making 4-for-7 shots from three-point range. His production also included five rebounds, three assists and a steal.
