I just finished listening to the radio show “All Things Real Estate” on WEEB 990-AM, and I was so impressed by the presentation from First Health Hospice that I felt compelled to write.
Pam Hudson, Tina Gibbs and Charlie McWilliams epitomize what hospice is all about, and the dedication of those who work and volunteer with hospice. Though an hour is only enough to hit the tip of the iceberg, I felt as though all the salient points were covered.
Hearing both McWilliams and host Bill Sahadi discussing their personal experiences with hospice care was both poignant and resonant. Gibbs’ discussion of the interdisciplinary team exemplified the hospice approach to end-of-life care, and I also appreciated her mention of how critical volunteers are to hospice.
McWilliams and Hudson noted another significant concern in the hospice community. Families and patients are often referred to hospice belatedly, so there is limited ability to provide the level of symptom management and family support that might otherwise have been offered.
I hope this show will generate conversations and provide patients and caregivers with an opening to bring up hospice with family and physicians.
If this show helps even one family who would not otherwise have considered hospice, then it is a success.
I think it is fantastic that we have the forum to discuss these relevant topics and the desire to bring this type of information to the people of Moore County.
