A chili cook-off and 5K run, with a 17-mile bike ride, to benefit the Wounded Warrior Foundation and Hugs Across America will be held Saturday, Nov. 13 (rain date Nov. 14).

The run and bike ride kick off at 10 a.m.

The chili cook-off begins at noon at O’Donnell’s Pub. Admission is $5 for adults; children are admitted free.

Curt Shelvey, a former Sandhills Community College culinary instructor, will judge two categories, Restaurant Favorite and Back Yard Best, with prizes awarded to winners of both categories. Tony Barnes will be providing the afternoon’s music.

Arts and Crafts Fest

On Saturday, Nov. 13, Whispers, a nonprofit organization in Whispering Pines, presents the third annual arts and craft festival to be held at the Country Club of Whispering Pines, 2 Country Club Blvd., Whispering Pines, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be 35 local artists and craftsmen selling jewelry, candles, baskets, quilts, doll clothes, wooden toys and much more, just in time for holiday shopping. There will also be a bake sale featuring homemade cakes, pies, cookies, bread, jams and jellies. The club will serve lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This in an indoor event with free admission and parking.

Benefit Bingo

The Women of Seven Lakes and the Seven Lakes Kiwanis are holding an EMS Benefit Bingo Party Sunday, Nov. 14, at 2 p.m. in the West Side Park Community Center.

The proceeds from this event will be donated to the Seven Lakes EMS Squad to defray costs of its ambulance. Bingo prizes will be items from the Pampered Chef line of food preparation wares. There will be cooking demonstrations and tastings, door prizes and free Pampered Chef sample items. A raffle will also be held for additional Pampered Chef items.

Weekend Adoption Event

Area animal rescue groups will be at PetSmart Saturday, Nov. 13, and Sunday, Nov. 14, to join in a national pre-holiday adoption event. This is a national initiative for the fall when all PetSmart stores open their doors to rescue groups to find homes for their furry friends.

All pets for adoption have been spayed or neutered and are current on all inoculations, providing an affordable way to add a pet to your family. Animal Advocates of Moore County, The Haven — Friends for Life, Moore Humane, Sandhills Animal Rescue League and Scotland County Humane Society will be participating.

“Even if you are not ready to adopt, come visit this exciting event and get to know the rescue groups and what they have to offer when you might be ready to adopt,” says a spokesman.

Yard Sale

The Southern Pines Elementary School PTO will hold a yard sale fundraiser Saturday, Nov. 13, from 8 a.m. to noon in the school’s gym on Massachusetts Avenue, Southern Pines.

Guitarists Play

Weymouth’s Chamber Music Series is presenting classical guitarists Doug James and Pasquale Rucco performing a program for Duo Classical Guitar at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14.

This performance is made possible by donations from business sponsors and individuals. The business sponsors are Wells Fargo Advisors, McNeill Oil and Propane Company, Auto Werks, and the Friends of Weymouth Board.

Admission charge is free for members of Weymouth and $15 for nonmembers.

Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities is at 555 E. Connecticut Ave., Southern Pines.

Heritage Day

Heritage Day, an annual event of Westmoore Pottery, will be held Saturday, Nov. 13, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event commemorates the founding of Westmoore Pottery by David and Mary Farrell in November 1977. Each year’s Heritage Day also celebrates pottery from North Carolina’s past.

The focus of this year’s Heritage Day will be on styles of heavily decorated pottery that were made by non-Moravian potters in central North Carolina from 1750-1850. Displays with information about those early potters will be scattered throughout the shop.

Pottery-making will be demonstrated throughout the day. The official Westmoore Pottery scrapbooks will be on display. A kiln-load of pottery by Westmoore Pottery will be opened for Heritage Day, and will be available for purchase beginning at 9 a.m.

Westmoore Pottery is located at 4622 Busbee Road, just off N.C. 705, halfway between the small towns of Seagrove and Robbins.

There is no charge to the public for this event.

Open House

Downtown Aberdeen businesses will hold a holiday open house Friday, Nov. 12, and Saturday, Nov. 13. Refreshments will be served and most businesses will have special deals.

Walk for Diabetes Awareness

The Carthage Lions Club is sponsoring the annual Strides Walk for Diabetes Awareness Saturday, Nov. 13, at Nancy Kiser Park in Carthage. The park is beside Carthage Elementary School on Rockingham Street.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month.The funds raised will support juvenile diabetes research and assist local persons who are visually impaired.

Registration for the walk begins at 9 a.m. The walk is two miles long and begins at 10 a.m. All walkers who register and participate will receive a T-shirt. Teams and clubs are encouraged to participate.
