O’Neal graduate Michael McGowan shot a college career low round of 66 on consecutive days, leading the Tar Heels to victory at the recent UNC Greensboro Bridgestone Golf Collegiate.
The sophomore from Southern Pines made 18 birdies over the three rounds in the tournament that wrapped up on Oct. 24. He finished in third place individually after posting scores of 71-66-66 for a 13-under par total of 203. Blayne Boyer, of Auburn, and David Lipsky, of Northwestern, were co-medalists with 202 totals.
For his performance, McGowan was named the Tar Heel Performer of the Week for the week of Oct. 18-24.
Teammate Jack Fields, a Pinecrest graduate, also from Southern Pines, contributed to the spectacular performance by Coach John Inman’s squad. He finished eighth individually after rounds of 67-70-73-210.
The Tar Heels’ second day, 20-under par team total of 268 at Forest Oaks Country Club, playing at par 72, 7,197 yards, was the lowest in school history. They won by seven strokes over ninth-ranked Auburn, setting a tournament record with a three-day team total of 833 in the process.
Robert Hoadley, a Union Pines graduate from Southern Pines, went low on the second day for UNC Greensboro before finishing in a tie for 30th place with scores of 73-67-77-217. The host Spartans came in 11th in the field of 14 teams.
