The scholarship committee of the Central Carolinas Phi Beta Kappa Association will hold a wine-tasting event at Elliott’s on Linden in Pinehurst Wednesday, Nov. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m.

“A unique selection of wines and award-winning hors d’oeuvres will be served and the community is invited to attend and support the scholarships for college-bound students and awards to high school teachers,” says a spokesman.

Since 2003, the association has awarded $15,000 to college students at Sandhills Community College, UNC-Pembroke and to Moore County and Lee County high school seniors, as well as recognition awards to outstanding high school teachers.

In the fall of this year, the committee will award educational books to six high school seniors in the counties of Moore and Lee. In the spring of 2011, these students will be eligible to compete for a college scholarship.

The students are selected on the basis of outstanding academics and have intentions to enroll in a college curriculum of liberal arts and science.

The Phi Beta Kappa Society has been an advocate of excellence in the liberal arts and sciences since its founding in 1776. An invitation to membership to an undergraduate college junior or senior is a reflection of a love of learning, intellectual integrity, tolerance for other’s views and a broad range of academic interests.

Seventeen U.S. presidents are or have been members of the Society, as well as outstanding persons in various fields, such as the founder of Amazon. com, actress Glenn Close, composer Sondheim and Peyton Manning, NFL quarterback.

The Central Carolinas Association of PBK members includes Phi Beta Kappa graduates from Moore, Lee, Cumberland and surrounding counties. The funding of the scholarships and awards to high school teachers are funded solely by donations and a fundraiser, such as the upcoming wine tasting.

The association is a nonprofit organization under the IRS tax code 501(c)(3). The price of the wine tasting is $25.
