Sandhills Children’s Center hosted its annual Gratitude Gathering Tuesday, April 20, to honor all volunteers and to recognize the extraordinary efforts of one in particular, who was the recipient of the Perry T. Shilts Helping Hands award.
This year’s recipient was Della Irene McNeill, affectionately referred to by children and staff as “Miss Irene.”
McNeill has worked and volunteered with the Children’s Center since 1994. In those 16 years of service, McNeill has volunteered nearly half of that time.
“Not only has Irene been a faithful employee, but she has also been a very dedicated volunteer, says Melanie C. Gayle, CEO of the center. “Most recently, she has volunteered in the kitchen to assist in food preparation. She loves the children and loves all of her fellow employees. She’s a blessing to this organization and a bright spot in everyone’s day!”
The entire week of April 19 – 23 is a gentle reminder to thank those who are so important to the success of the program.
“Though we are thankful all year, this special week provides us an opportunity to honor our gracious volunteers, whose diverse support and genuine care are vital to the Sandhills Children’s Center operation,” says Kathy Desmond, director of development. “All that a volunteer does, in whatever wonderful way he or she provides assistance, helps to make the children’s challenges easier.”
“Sandhills Children’s Center is very fortunate to have a growing yet challenging volunteer program,” says Gayle. “Our Center depends on volunteers to help with various classroom projects, field trips, meals, and with the many other daily activities with which the children and staff need an extra hand. In addition to classroom volunteers, there are volunteer opportunities in administrative work, during special events (such as Festival of Trees), and in maintenance.”
“Although a volunteer’s job duties may be challenging at times, it is the sense of duty and how it affects them personally that keeps them coming back,” says Desmond.
