Summer is basketball camp season for area high schools.
Youths wishing to participate in one of the local camps can have their pick of camps being run by the three Moore County public high schools over the same dates in mid-June.
Union Pines
Union Pines High School will hold its annual Viking Basketball Camp June 14-17 at Bob Ward Gymnasium.
The camp, the longest running one of its kind in the area, is open to rising third- through ninth-grade boys and girls and will be led by Union Pines boys’ coach Bobby Purvis and girls’ coach John Lewkowicz along with Viking assistant coaches and players. There will also be daily speakers.
“We have been doing this for over 30 years,” said Purvis. “It is an individual skills camp with the goal being first and foremost for the campers to have lots of fun, while developing fundamental basketball skills and also increasing their overall knowledge of the sport.”
The camp runs each day from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The fee per camper is $40, and each camper will receive a T-shirt.
Participants can register early by sending a check or money order to Union Pines Basketball, attention Bobby Purvis, 1981 Union Church Road, Cameron, NC, 28326. On-site registration will be held on Monday, June 14, from 8 to 8:30 a.m.

Campers should bring a water bottle, basketball shoes, a towel and pocket money for refreshments.
Pinecrest
Registrations are being accepted for the Patriot Basketball Camp to be held at Pinecrest High School from June 14-17.
The camp, directed by Pinecrest boys’ basketball coach Mike Apple, is for boys and girls in the rising third- through ninth-grades. It is geared toward players desiring to improve their individual basketball skills.
Experienced coaches will teach campers the fundamentals of the game, provide organized team play with other campers and provide a chance to participate in games and other daily camp competitions.
The camp staff will include other coaches that are a part of the Pinecrest basketball program as well as other area coaches and present and former members of the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams at the school.
The camp hours are from 8:30 a.m. to noon each day. The cost of the camp is $45. Checks should be made payable to Pinecrest High School.
Each camper will receive a camp T-shirt and a handbook. The camp activities include an ice cream party.
Applications can be picked up at the high school. For questions, call (910) 692-6554 or (910) 949-4160.
