The Sunrise Theater’s SunFlix Series winds up the month of May with an acclaimed foreign drama/thriller, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” a film based on the best-selling Swedish novel.
This film will air from Thursday, May 27, through Monday, June 2, with shows at 7:30 p.m. on weekdays and 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The film stars Michael Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace, Peter Haber, Lena Endre and Marika Lagercrantz.
“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is an award-winning crime novel by the late Swedish author and journalist Stieg Larsson. At his death in November 2004, he left three unpublished novels that made up a trilogy. This film is the first in the series. The novel became a posthumous best-seller.
A summary of the plot provided by the film’s website follows: “Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her beloved uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Nyqvist) and the tattooed and troubled but resourceful computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Rapace) to investigate. When the pair link the disappearance of Harriet to a number of grotesque murders from almost 40 years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. The Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.”
The movie carries no MPAA rating but is recommended for adults, due to sexual themes, nudity and violence.
The historic Sunrise Theater, located at 250 NW Broad St. in Southern Pines, is nonprofit. Ticket prices are $7 for evening shows and $6 for the matinees. Refreshments, including beer and wine, are available, and all movies are commercial free.
